TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 28, 2021

Jesus vs the Cross

Today is July 28, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Good Friday and Easter Sunday are probably the most talked about days in history. And, when it comes to applying those days to our lives, Psalm 30:5 captures the perceived expectation.

Psalm 30:5
…weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

However, in reality, when weeping came for that night on Good Friday, rejoicing did not come in the morning. No. After Good Friday came Saturday. And, on Saturday, we get silence. On Saturday, Jesus waited.

For the early church, there were some who did not believe there was the resurrection of the dead. In essence, they were choosing to live in their 'Friday.' They were choosing despair. For others, there were some who chose to believe that the resurrection had already take place. In essence, they were choosing to live in their 'Sunday.' They were choosing denial.

However, what Jesus teaches us is that there is another option between despair and denial. That, after defeat on the cross you don't fade out and fade in to the empty tomb. No. After Good Friday comes Saturday and that is when you wait on the Lord. That's what 'Saturday' is. Waiting on the Lord means we seek the Lord, recognizing that He is our own only hope. It means not falling into despair but, at the same time, not denying our emotions.

And the reason we seek the Lord is because we know that we will find him in Jesus Christ.

If we can find Jesus in our pains and sufferings, we can find Jesus in death and silence. And the more we meditate on this choice by Jesus, the more we will see that there is nothing Jesus won't experience, no suffering he won't go through or pain he won't endure, to save us.

This is his love for us and, from that love, we can find hope.

And so, despite this world feeling like a 'Friday/Saturday' world. Despite it feeling like a 2-day story. Whatever hurt or pain or frustration or failure you experience, do not give up. Do not fall into despair. Wait on the Lord and seek Him with all you heart, for we are not living a 2-day story. No. We are living a 3-day story, and your Sunday will come.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 21, 2021

Jesus vs the Pharisees

Today is July 21, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus' rebuke of the Pharisees in Matthew 23 is really a rebuke on all Christians who sin. Instead of attacking the Pharisees for what they did toward him, Jesus, instead, had righteous anger for the people who were following the Pharisees.

Jesus' focus was not on himself but on those who were victims, on those who were being influenced negatively by the actions of the Pharisees.

Moreover, Jesus was sorrowful. Seven times Jesus says "woe," displaying a extreme amount of distress and grief at what was happening.

However, at the same time, Jesus showed compassion. Jesus' hope was not that the Pharisees would leave and never come back. Jesus' hope was that they would repent and come back.

In the face of being attacked by the Pharisees, Jesus showed a selfless focus, a maternal love, and a desire that all would come back to the Lord like chicks under the wings of a mother hen. And for us who call ourselves Christians, in the wake of other Christians sinning against us, Jesus' example is what we need to try to do.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the example of Jesus and reflect upon the Christians who have sinned against you, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 14, 2021

Jesus vs Satan

Today is July 14, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

In Satan' attack of Jesus in the early point of Jesus' ministry, we learn several things. First of all, Satan is waging a war for hearts and minds. Maybe not so that we would love him, but that we would definitely turn away from God.

Temptations force a person to either take a step closer to God or a step away from God. In Satan's temptations, we see a campaign of distraction, a campaign of distortion, and a campaign of denial - all targeting the hearts and mind of the individual.

Meaning, Satan is playing the long game. Satan is not going for a single blow or a single act. He is not gonna invade the city or come out in all spectacle. Satan's attack is sneaky, subtly, and, if we are to be honest, effective.

Christianity has been on the decline in America for decades. More pews are empty. More churches are closing. Even at our church, if we were to be critical, how many of the thousands that have passed through our own church still go to a church or even claim they are still Christian?

In order to fight the battle we must first be willing to acknowledge the battle, to see the seriousness of the threat and the casualties inflicted by it. Only in doing so can we take to heart what Jesus shows us.

Because, what Jesus shows us is how to win. That by preparing for the attack and knowing the word of God, we can fight back. However, we must first acknowledge the spiritual campaign for our hearts and minds that is taking place right now.

God's blessing and protection over you as you mediate on the attacks of Satan, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 7, 2020

Jesus vs the Storm

Today is July 7, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus taking a nap in the middle of the storm (Mark 4) is more than just an example of his humanity or his trust in his Father in heaven, it is Jesus showing us the certainty of heaven.

Just hours earlier he had taught his disciples about the reality of the kingdom of God and he made this warning:

Mark 4:18-19b
Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life... choke the word, making it unfruitful.

Well, because Jesus was so certain about the kingdom of God, he did not let the worry of that moment - the storm - choke out the truth of the kingdom of God. Instead, his certainty was rewarded with the fruit of peace. So much fruit, in fact, that he was able to sleep during a storm.

In essence, Jesus was showing the fruit of viewing this life from the perspective of eternity.

Now, that doesn't give us a license to do nothing. No. Apostle Paul makes it clear that since we know we have life after death, we should stand firm, let nothing move us, and give ourselves fully to the work of Lord, because we know that our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58.)

The point is that whatever storm we are in - whatever setback or failure, tragedy or mistake - we have that hope in the risen Lord, in the kingdom of God, in eternity, and that should help us bear the same fruit that Jesus showed on that boat in the middle of the storm.

God's blessing upon you as you reflect on your next life and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 30, 2021

Soul Alert

Today is June 30, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Sometimes the pain we experience is warning us of a potential danger, like when our stomach growls warning us of starvation or when we get certain symptoms warning us of potential serious health problems.

Well, every time our soul aches, it is warning us of the sinfulness of this world. Whether hopelessness or anxiety, feeling trapped or out of control. Our soul aches from sin and the only cure is the Lord.

The problem is that, as adults, we have a tendency to play down our pain. That, to be an adult means not expressing our need for relief or assistance or help.

However, when Jesus told his disciples that, "...unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3) What he was telling them was that, to be a Christian adult means expressing our need.

Instead of ignoring or toughening through, instead of focusing on something else or downplaying it all together, when our soul aches we need to seek the Lord with all our heart and mind and strength and soul.

We need the Lord. That is where our soul finds rest, where we find our peace, where our soul is full.

And every time our soul aches, it should be our alert that we need to, once again, draw near to the Lord.

God's blessing as you mediate on your soul's alert system and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.
