Intercessory Prayer - The Model

Today is October 13, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Praying for someone is one of the easiest ways to love them. It is one of those things that we learn early and practice often. In fact, it is something that we do during our services each and every Sunday.

However, what Daniel shows us in Daniel 9 is that, more than just lifting some one up in prayer, the approach and the focus of that prayer is equally, if not more, important.

True intercessory prayers is about coming to the Lord with this heartbroken, repentant attitude, recognizing our own unworthiness. That's the approach Daniel shows us. At the same time, the focus of the prayer is for God's glory to be seen. It not whether the prayer is answered. It is not about whether it benefits us or not, or whether it costs everything or not. True intercessory prayer is wanting God's name to be glorified.

That's what Daniel shows us.

Meaning, when it comes to intercessory prayer, Daniel is reminding us not take our ability to approach the throne of God for granted. True reverence is recognizing that we are sinners talking to a Holy God, and that fact should change our approach and focus as we make our requests.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on Daniel's model of intercessory prayer, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 6, 2021

Gateway to Freedom

Today is October 6, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Last week I bought a mini watermelon from Ralphs and starting putting rubber bands around it. At 100 rubber bands I could see the shape changing. At 150 rubber bands, it started to sweat water. At 180 rubber bands, it exploded.

And, in one way, that is what the world does to us. This world makes our bodies weak and frail. It dishonors us and distorts us and swallows us up in death.

But what does God do?

In love, God gives us a place where we will never have to experience sickness or decay or deterioration or death. A place where we will no longer have to be subject to the flaws and fragility that pervade our life today. A place with no rubber bands. A place of no stresses. Where we live in glory and power and where, as it says in 1 Corinthians 15:54:

1 Corinthians 15:54b
…“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

That's what God does for us in love. And the only way we get there is through the work of Jesus on the cross.

This past Sunday we celebrated World Communion Sunday and, together with many churches around the globe, we participated in the sacrament of communion. And, one of the reasons we remember Jesus' suffering and death is because it was through that act that we obtained access to heaven.

Jesus was the gateway to our freedom. And, for Apostle Paul, that meant that we had a responsibility:

Galatians 5:1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

God's blessing as you meditate on heaven, Jesus as the gateway, and what it means to stand firm in this world, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 29, 2021

Elevated Joy

Today is September 29, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Jesus compared his disciples to his mother and brothers in Matthew 12, what he was really doing was teaching and challenging us to view Christians as our family. Meaning the purpose of our family is not just for our personal benefit or the benefit of our children, but it is for the purpose of knowing how to treat others who follow Jesus.

Meaning, as much as we share and call and listen and give support to; as much as we invest and prepare and pray and cherish and care about; as much as we are committed to – from this day forward, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, till death takes us home…

That is how we are supposed to treat other followers of Jesus. That is how we are to treat the church. And the reason is for our benefit.

We were made to glorify God. When we do what we are made to do, we experience joy. And coming together as a spiritual family only elevates that joy more. The more we see other Christians as our family, the more our joy is elevated.

And that is the point.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the church family and your role in the church family, and I look forward to worshipping with you in the Main Sanctuary for Joint Worship, World Communion Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 22, 2021

Desperate and Unashamed

Today is September 22, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday, Pastor Diana preached about Bartimaeus, the blind man who came to Jesus. And, in one way, it was a character study, challenging us to approach Jesus in the same way.

And we should.

He who loves us, proven via death on a cross, who prepares our eternity even as we speak. He who knows us from before we were born, who has walked with us every step of the way, who knows each tear that falls and how many hairs are on our head. Why wouldn't we approach He who loves us and knows us this extensively with vulnerability and sincerity and confidence? Especially with the pains that this broken world brings upon us each day? Why wouldn't we run to him, daily, with unabashed desperation and hope?

And yet, call it cultural or societal expectations; call it pride or external pressure; call it sin. But, whatever the reason, we seldom do it. There are just too many other things to focus on. Too many responsibilities. Too many distractions. Too many goals to achieve. Fixing our eyes upon Jesus is a distant 2nd to the what the world has to offer.

And, in doing so, we miss miracles.

So, let us take a page out of Bartimaeus' book and let us approached the Lord desperate and unashamed.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the person and action of Bartimaeus, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

- Rev. Frank Kim

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 8, 2021

A Little Bit of Peter and a Little Bit of Paul

Today is September 8, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the reasons the 1st century church grew was because of the work of Apostle Peter and Apostle Paul. Apostle Peter was able to reach and convert a vast number of Jews because of his similar background and upbringing. Apostle Paul was able to reach and convert a vast number of gentiles because of his education and training.

Both of their work combined to create the multi-ethnic church that is described in the book of Acts. And their example is what I believe we are called to do in our multi-ethnic church.

There are plenty of Apostle Peter opportunities where our background and upbringing would be perfect to reach someone with the gospel. There are also Apostle Paul opportunities where our education and training would be perfect to reach someone else with the gospel.

And this idea is not just confined to the church.

There are siblings that we can be Apostle Peter to while there are friends we can be Apostle Paul to.
There are co-workers that we can be Apostle Peter to and clients we can be Apostle Paul to.
There are neighbors that we can be Apostle Peter to and people in the city that we can be Apostle Paul to.

The point is that we are called to do both. That we do not focus on one to the detriment of the other. But, like a delicate balance – going back and forth on the scale – we try to be a little bit like Peter and a little bit like Paul for the sake that all people would know the love of Christ.

God's blessing upon you as your reflect on how you were uniquely made and who you can be Peter and Paul to, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
