TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Harvesting Righteousness

Today is November 17, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33 that if we seek God's kingdom and his righteousness, it will help us with our anxieties and worries. That, for peace, we need God's righteousness in our lives.

So, how do we obtain God's righteousness? Well, the bible makes it clear that it is only found in Jesus Christ.

True righteousness is not obtained by good deeds. It is not obtained by fulfilling a list of items. True righteousness is only found when we seek Jesus Christ with all our hearts and souls in minds.

In essence, true righteousness is a fruit of that relationship. True righteousness is harvested.

Now, seeking Jesus should compel us to do what he did - to be peace makers. This is why James tells us in James 3:18 that peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. But it starts with seeking Jesus first, in striving to know who he is and what he did.

God's blessing as you seek Jesus Christ this week, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Harvest Focus

Today is November 10, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

In one way, Proverbs 14:4 is in response to farmers who were tired of cleaning up after the oxen.

"If only there were no oxen, then this manger would stay clean!"

However, the wisdom of Proverbs 14:4 is to focus on the abundant harvest and not on the mess of the oxen.

Sometimes manure is needed for a harvest. Sometimes frustration is needed for growth. Sometimes unanswered prayers are needed to complete God's mission.

With Thanksgiving on its way, Proverbs 14:4 is a reminder to stop complaining, to take off those poop stained glasses and to put on the glasses of the Lord. For, from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.

God's blessing upon you as meditate on complaining and the perspective of God, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Intercessory Prayer - Jesus' Prayer

Today is November 3, 2021

Welcome to November and your mid-week!

Imagine that this world is a cruise ship and it hits an iceberg called sin and, now, it is irrevocably damaged and sinking. Because God loves us, he sends Jesus to save us from the boat. Jesus' mission, therefore, is not that we have a better cabin or more stuff or live a more comfortable and longer life in our cabin. Jesus' mission is that we get off of the boat. And, once he teaches us how to escape safely, he asks that we spread the word so that the most amount of people can be saved.

Now, we can take this analogy farther and talk about the new cruise ship that he prepares for us in advance where there are no icebergs, but, you get the idea.

Jesus was sent by God for a specific mission.

From that standpoint you can see why Jesus' intercessory pray isn't focused on the disciple's pressing needs and hardships. If anything, he makes it clear that he's not praying for that (John 17:15). Jesus' intercessory prayer is that, despite their hardships, they might stay united so that the mission - Jesus' mission - might be accomplished.

That "the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:21)

Now, Jesus's example doesn't mean we stop praying for the needs of people. What Jesus' prayer teaches us is that intercessory prayer is more than what we think it is. Intercessory prayer is a way to promote unity amongst believers, show the world the love God has for them, and, ultimately, accomplish the mission of God whether our prayer is answered or not.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with this difficult lesson and Jesus' perspective, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 27, 2021

Intercessory Prayer - A Priestly Responsibility

Today is October 27, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

The act of intercession was something that the High Priest did for all of Israel. So, when 1 Timothy 2:1 tells us that we are now to give intercession and prayers for all people, what the bible is telling us is that, in many ways, we are called to be priests.

That means, just as it was for priests of the Old Testament, interceding on behalf of people is our privilege. It is the opportunity to experience and be part of someone's else life. Interceding on behalf of people is our duty. It is the responsibility that we have as people who are called to be, as it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, praying continually. Interceding on behalf of people is important. It is the action that, just as it did for Lot when Moses interceded on behalf of him to God, can change the direction of a life.

When we pray for someone we are interceding on behalf of them. That work is a privilege, a duty, and important. It is priestly work. It is why 1 Peter 2:9 tells us that we are a royal priesthood.

So, while Jesus is our perfect High Priest who intercedes on behalf of us to God making atonement for our sins via his perfect sacrifice, the bible now calls all Christians to be the royal priesthood. Meaning, we are called to intercede on behalf of all people via prayer.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on doing the work of a priest, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Intercessory Prayer - The Prayer for Healing

Today is October 20, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

James' discussion on the prayer of healing in James 5 should be very relatable. James basically tells us that the prayer of healing is all about prayer, medicine, and acknowledging that everything is subject to God's will.

But, what I love about his discussion, is how he brings in the church. James challenges the church to pray as well.

Back in that era, people who were sick or infirm were often made hidden by those in society. For James, it was the opposite. Those who were sick in the Christian community needed to receive special attention by the whole congregation. Just as joy was shared by members, so praying for those who are sick should be shared.

And the reason James does this is because intercessory prayer benefits all parties involved.

When we pray with confidence in the Lord, we receive spiritual wellness and the ability to move forward; a supernatural peace that, as Philippians 4:7 reminds us, "transcends all understanding." When we pray for healing for someone and we do not know the outcome, we can rest assured knowing that what God can do, He has already done on the cross.

James is reminding us of the peace found in knowing that our future is secure. That's the spiritual healing that James wants for the whole church, including the person in need of healing. And this is why he encourages the church to pray as well.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on the prayer for healing - of sharing and the church's role and of the fruit of peace - and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

- Rev. Frank Kim
