Making Things Right

Today is January 26, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

When an injustice was taking place between God's people, Nehemiah quickly took action to make things right. And this made sense given his goal. How could two people stand together and worship next to each other if they are harboring bitter feelings toward each other?

In Jesus' sermon on the mount, Jesus mentions how important it is to be reconciled with our brothers and sisters - that, before we offer our gift to the Lord, we need to go and make sure our relationships are right. This lesson is what we see Nehemiah champion in Nehemiah chapter 5.

The challenge for us is that, unlike the people of God who had only one Jerusalem and one temple, we have hundreds, if not thousands of options literally a click away. This richness of options and choices means that we can go an entire life time without reconciling with the people at church.

If we don't like someone, we can simply just leave and worship elsewhere.

But what Nehemiah shows us in the book of Nehemiah is what we see the whole church do in Revelation 7:9-10. We will, one day, stand side by side in worship of our Lord. And that includes all those Christians that you might not like right now.

Nehemiah's challenge then is that we should not avoid being sanctified by the conflict that we experience at church. If anything, we should embrace it. The more we experience the complexity of relationships, the more we can truly appreciate what Jesus did for us.

And that will lead to a deeper and purer worship.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestles with your relationships within the larger church of God, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 19, 2022

In the Face of Opposition

Today is January 19, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Nehemiah and God's people started to rebuild the broken wall around Jerusalem, they were faced with opposition. Psychologically,

their insecurities were attacked,
their hope was attacked,
their faith was attacked,
their ability was attacked, and
their accomplishments were attacked.

When going in the direction God wants you to go, you should expect opposition. Spiritual warfare is real and Satan would love it if you were to just give up.

But what Nehemiah teaches us is that, when faced with insecurity, doubt, mistrust, and past failures, we should pray. We should reconnect with our maker and be reminded of his great power and his amazing love for us. How, as Romans 8:31 tells us, if God is for us, who can be against us?

Our identity is not found in what we have or have not done. Nor is our worth based on what we have or have not accomplished.

God loves us and views us worthy to be saved. That is God's amazing love for us that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. In turn, we must simply be faithful with the good work God has prepared for us to do. To continue to do the good work in the face of the spiritual opposition that we face.

God's blessing upon you as strive forward doing the good that God has called you to do, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 12, 2022

The Opening Journey

Today is January 12 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

If we look at Nehemiah's life before chapter 1, he had a safe and secure, if not privileged lifestyle. However, the experience he would have had in Nehemiah chapter 8 - to be worshiping God with his people in Jerusalem - that would have been a grander, more cathartic experience than anything he could have ever imagined.

It would have been like witnessing a miracle.

I think the hard thing for us to do, especially because of the pandemic, is to love others. Especially when it comes to the limited time and energy that we have on this earth. Why try to invest in people who are not family? Why try to invest in people who are not our love ones? Why say 'yes' the needs of others?

However, what Nehemiah shows us is that by following the word of God to do good to all people (Galatians 6:10), it will not only bless those we help, but will also bless us abundantly so. It will give us experiences we would never have been able to experience if we didn't follow God's word.

Meaning, as daunting or as challenging or as humbling it is to love, that journey is worth it.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestles with loving others, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 5, 2022

Our 2022 Vision

Today is January 5 2022

Welcome to January 2022 and your mid-week!

In Nehemiah chapter 8 we see a portion of God's exiled people returned to Jerusalem. The temple is built, the wall is up, and Priest Ezra is leading the worship. Nehemiah 8 shows us the end result of a long journey.

But what do we see in Nehemiah 1?

Well, in chapter 1 we see mourning, fasting, and praying. We see caring, prioritization, and commitment. What we see in Nehemiah is the attitude needed in order to get to chapter 8. And that is where we must begin.

For 2022, our church's vision is 'Rising Together Again in Worship.' It is a hope that, this year, we can return to obeying the commands of God together as a church. And our vision verse is Nehemiah 8:5 which is the end result of Nehemiah's journey - it is God's people standing together in worship.

But to get there we need to learn from Nehemiah's beginning.

We need to care and have compassion for each other.
We need to prioritize one another like we would our family.
We need to commit to one another in prayer.

If not, we might be able to rise again and worship God, but we wouldn't be doing it together. And we wouldn't be the biblical church.

Now, I know, the pandemic is still here. Omicron is sweeping the nation. A new strain was discovered in France just the other day. We are beginning our 3rd year and there appears to be no end in sight.

However, in a lot of ways this pandemic has changed us for the worse. Comfort has become more important than the church. Flexibility has become more important than our faith. Desire has become more important than our devotion.

We cannot continue in that direction.

This vision is not advocating anything unsafe. This year's vision is for us to return to the Lord together, to obey the word of God together, and to rise once again in worship together. This is what the Lord called his people to do, and this is what we will strive for this year.

God's blessing as you meditate on this vision for the 2022 year, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 29, 2022

Walking in the Truth Amidst the Storm

Today is December 29, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past year our church's vision was 'Walking in the Truth Amidst the Storm.' It was a vision aimed at the current storm that we all are facing: the pandemic.

And what was it a call to do? Well...

It was a call to go to the word of the Lord and to learn from the men and women of God through their storms.
It was a call to look at the example of Jesus and to see things from God’s perspective.
It was call to pray and to get out of our boats, to focus on the true hope and peace and joy and love that we have through Jesus Christ.

And it was a call to follow Peter's example; to draw near to God and to learn from him.

When we draw near to God we are able to fight the fears of our storm because God is love (1 John 4:8) and perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18).
When we draw near to God we need not worry about own failings because God forgives us (Psalm 103:8-12).
When we draw near to God we are able to once again learn the truth of his word: that he is the rock (1 Samuel 2:2), our fortress (Psalm 18:2), our firm foundation (2 Timothy 2:19), our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1), the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13), the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

From the truth of who God is and who we are in Christ, we can confidently move forward through any storm.

With us going into the 3rd year of the pandemic, now more than ever do we need to abide with our savior - to draw near to him and to learn from him - because, when we do, we will be able to walk in the truth amidst the storm.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on this past year and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
