TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 9, 2022

Remembering Our Identity in Christ

Today is March 9, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday Pastor Tim preached on Ephesians chapter 4 and talked about remembering our identity in Christ.

And, to me, our identity in Christ means a life filled with God our father.
It means a life filled with a large and loving family that we call the church.
It means a life being lived with the understanding that we are citizens of another kingdom - one not in a pandemic or at war or filled with suffering and death.

Now, our identity in Christ means more than just reaping the rewards of that identity. It also means that we are striving to being the same as Christ. That our new identity should be recognizable to both ourselves and to others. That our identity is evident - whether we really are 'in Christ' or 'in the world.'

However, the joys of that identity are what gives us hope. It is what gives us the strength to not give up and to take steps forward.

And, in trying times like these, that is the identity we need to remember.

God's blessing upon you as you remember and meditate on what it means to be 'in Christ,' and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 23, 2022

Praise!

Today is February 23, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the ways we worship the Lord is via praise. And praise is more than just singing. It includes shouting and instruments and dancing as well.

Praise is a joyful noise unto the Lord.

And shouldn't we praise the Lord, being proud of who he is?
Shouldn't we praise the Lord for what he has accomplished?
Shouldn't we praise the Lord to show our appreciation?
Shouldn't we praise the Lord to celebrate?

As much as we praise our sports teams, so should we praise the Lord for who he is and what he has done.

Moreover, praising also teaches and encourages and unites us as one - reminding us of the truth of scripture and the love that God has for us. This is why we praise.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on the joyful noise that you make to the Lord, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 16, 2022

False Worship

Today is February 16, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

When we study the false worship of Cain, we can see that the worship given was in service of Cain's own interests with the expectation that something beneficial would be given to him.

When we study the false worship of Aaron and God's people on Mt. Sinai, we can see that the worship of God was compromised to meet the comfortability of the people.

In both instances we see that when worship is for us - when we worship for our needs and our wants and our comfort and our preferences and our sensibilities - that is false worship.

Worship should not be done to serve our interests.
Worship should not be done with the expectation of receiving anything.
Worship should not be done to meet our comfortability.

True worship is our response to the mercy of God, the word of God, and to the Spirit of God.
True worship is all about God, reserved only for God, and done for God alone because He deserves it.

Meaning, when we apply this to church, it should give us a very clear reason why we should rise together again in worship.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on true and false worship, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 9, 2022

True Worship

Today is February 9, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

When you study Jesus' lesson on true worshippers in John 4, it becomes clear that what we do in worship is secondary to where our hearts and minds are at. It does not matter how many hours we serve, how much money we give, or how loud our voice is when we sing. If we do not know God, we cannot worship God.

This is why prayer is incredibly important – why we are commanded to pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:16) - so that we are right with God and that we are truly worshipping in the Spirit and in truth.

When you study Apostle Paul's lesson on true worshippers in Romans 12:1-2, it becomes clear that our motivation to worship should be out of God's mercy. Meaning, coming to church shouldn't be a burden nor a place to network. It shouldn't be an obligation nor viewed as optional. And church should never be about what we get out of it.

Church is the place where we express our thanksgiving to God in worship. Where the actions that we do - whether to sing or serve or pray or do communion - is all for the worship of God alone. If we get blessed or others get blessed when we obey God's command, then that is just another example of God's mercy upon.

But, our actions of worship should stem from a deep understanding of God's mercy. And our understand of God's mercy only comes from being in the Spirit and in truth.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on what it means to be a true worshipper, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2, 2022

The Joy of Worship

Today is February 2, 2022

Welcome to February and your mid-week!

In Nehemiah 8, we see the people of God crying as the word of God is read. They are not crying out of sadness or agony. They are crying out of joy.

For 70 years they had been exiled; forced to assimilate to first, the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires, and then to the Persian Empire. 70 years means that the 3rd generation of Jewish exiles were being born and raised in Persia.

Just as the Korean cultural identity is lost with each generation this is raised in America, so there was a real fear that the Jewish cultural identity would be lost.

But, with the exile over and God's people back in Judah, worshipping together in Jerusalem, all that fear would have been gone. The word of God being present and read meant their identity was secure. Moreover, God's people being back meant that God was faithful. That, just as he prophesied through Jeremiah that they would be brought back, the rest of the prophecy must also be true! That they would have a hope and a future (Jeremiah 20:10-11).

This is why God's people are crying in joy during the reading of the word of God, and this is why we must rise together again in worship.

The longer we are in this world, the longer we assimilate to it. All of us experience bad days. All of us make mistakes. All of us have moments where we forget that we are Christian.

This is why we need to come together to build each other up; to build those metaphorical walls that protect us from the lies that this world tells us are true. This is why we need to worship together, to hear the word of God and be reminded of our spiritual identity - that, in Christ, we are God's children and that our future is secure.

And when we do that, just like the people of God, we will experience joy.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on Nehemiah, his journey, and the joy of worship, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
