TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MAY 18, 2022

Crucifying and Walking

Today is May 18, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

In John 15:4, Jesus uses a plant illustration to teach us that when we remain in him we will naturally produce fruit. Meaning, actions like service will come naturally the more we remain in Christ.

However, in Galatians 5, it is Apostle Paul who articulates what that means to remain in Christ. And, instead of a plant illustration, he uses the imagery of crucifixion.

For Apostle Paul, to remain in Christ was more than just bible reading and prayer. It was the daily choice to vigilantly crucify our flesh. It was the daily choice to make sure that the execution took place on the cross that Jesus said his disciples needed to carry. It was the daily choice to do more than just sanctification but mortification.

For Apostle Paul, the freedom Jesus gave us was meant to make that choice to let our flesh die. Meaning, before Christ, we were enslaved to it. However, now that we are free in Christ, we now have the power to go a different way - to go the way of the Spirit.

And, for Apostle Paul, the benefits of that way far exceeded going back.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the flesh and the Spirit and what it means to remain in Christ, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MAY 11, 2022

Becoming Mature

Today is May 11, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

Being united in the faith takes works of service. It is easy to be united with people that you like and who are similar to you. It takes works of service - humility and hospitality - to being united with people who you don't like and who are drastically different from you.

At the same time, to truly know Christ takes works of service. It is one thing to read what Jesus did. It is another thing to experience them for yourself, serving those who he served.

And the reason both unity and the faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ are important, is because both are needed to grow spiritually.

Serving those who are different than us is like iron sharpening iron.
Serving those who Jesus served not only teaches us our limitations but helps us to appreciate Jesus' actions for us both.

Works of service are needed for spiritual maturity.

And, considering what Apostle Paul preaches in Ephesians 4, spiritual maturity is not something individually accomplished. It is something done collectively. Something we the church need to be striving forward to do together in love (Ephesians 4:14-16).

Meaning the church is needed for spiritual maturity.

So, let us therefore, strive to serve on another. Let us strive in being united and knowing more about Christ until the day where we become spiritual mature.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on works of service and spiritual maturity, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MAY 4, 2022

Our Treasure

Today is May 4, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the first things that Jesus teaches at the start of his ministry is on treasure. And Jesus' lesson is simple: don't pursue earthly treasure, pursue heavenly treasure.

Earthly treasure does not last. Earthly treasure will be taken. Earthly treasure is temporary, unstable, limited, finite, and fleeting. Heavenly treasure, on the other hand, is the opposite. Heavenly treasure cannot be taken away and cannot be taken. Heavenly treasure is permanent, stable, unlimited, and constant.

And what is this heavenly treasure? It is Jesus himself. And, knowing Jesus is valuable.

In Jesus we experience supernatural peace - peace unaffected by circumstances.
In Jesus we experience supernatural joy - joy unaffected by the situation.
In Jesus we experience the resurrection and heaven and eternal life, free from pain or decay or death.

This is the treasure that is Jesus and why Apostle Paul called all of the earth's treasure that he had accumulated garbage in comparison to knowing Him.

And, since so much of our time and energy and thought and money will go toward what we treasure, this is why Jesus calls on all of us to pursue heavenly treasure instead of the earths' because, as Matthew 6:21 says, "where our treasure is, there our heart will be also."

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on what your treasure is, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 27, 2022

Of Blood and Water

Today is April 27, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

Hebrews 10:14 tells us that "...by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy."

This is what salvation is. It is both God's work for us on the cross, and God's work in us via the Holy Spirit. It is both what was done and what is currently taking place. We can simplify this to the work of the blood (Jesus) and the work of the water (the Holy Spirit).

Without the blood, our Christian life would be motivated by fear. It would prioritize being busy over being at peace; work over stillness with our maker.

Without the water, our Christian life would become stagnant and apathetic. It would prioritize the needs of ourselves over the needs of others.

Both of these are not what it means to be a Christian.

The bible makes it clear that God's loves for you is secure. At the same time the bible tells us that if we really knew of His love, we would love others in the same way.

And so, let us strive to worship and praise the one who loves us, all the while being sensitive to his Spirit as he molds us to fulfill his good purposes.

God's blessings upon you as you meditate with both concepts - of blood and water - and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 20, 2022

Easter Reflection

Today is April 20, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

Last week we celebrated Passion Week, culminating in a joint worship with KM for Easter. And, each year, passion week is not only a reminder of God's great love for us, it is also a reminder of the hope we have after this life.

As Jesus is alive, so will we be alive even though we die.

And this incredible, unearned, undeserved gift of God - of not just reuniting us with him but also preparing that place for us - is what should motivate us do everything God commands us to do. God's great action for us should compel us to learn more about Him, to love and to serve and to do missions; to forgive and to pray and to rise together again in worship.

God's actions should spur us to act.

And, for a moment, that is what we saw last Sunday, when so many different people came together and worshipped our Lord. We saw different cultures and life stages come and praise and pray and serve and love each other all in worship to our Risen King.

And that, in one way or another, is what we are supposed to do every day. Easter should not just be a day, it should be a life style.

God's blessing as you meditate on Easter, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
