Teach Holistically

Today is June 22, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

At the end of 2 Timothy chapter 3, Apostle Paul reiterates the importance of the word of God in sharing the gospel. However, Apostle Paul also indirectly teaches us just how important our actions are to sharing the gospel as well, especially to the people we know. That...

  • What we say and what we do can share the gospel
  • The way we live our lives can share the gospel
  • Our purpose - aka what we love to do, our interests, and what is most important to us - can share the gospel
  • Where we place our faith can share the gospel
  • How we wait can share the gospel
  • How and who we love can share the gospel
  • Enduring with hope can share the gospel
  • Loving those who persecute us can share the gospel
  • Trusting in the Lord in our sufferings can share the gospel

Sharing the gospel is not just presenting a prepared statement. It takes every aspect of our lives, especially to those who see us every single day. Because, whether you are aware of it or not, we are teaching someone something right now.

My prayer is that it would be the gospel of Jesus Christ.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on your words and actions on sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Teach Gently

Today is June 15, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

When it comes to sharing the gospel, I believe there is some misunderstanding on what that looks like. This is why Apostle Paul writes specifically on the details of it in 2 Timothy 2. And, what is our main responsibility in sharing the gospel? Well

It is first to ourselves.

Apostle Paul makes it clear that we are to make sure:

  • that we are not living a life in contradiction to the gospel nor that we are acting like hypocrites
  • that we are fleeing from a life of sin and, instead, pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace with other people of God
  • that we are not getting into foolish arguments but, in humility, showing kindness

Once we take care of that, then we can share the gospel. And Apostle Paul makes it clear that we are to teach it gently. Meaning, what we portray in our lives and the actions we do each day are incredibly important to having people receive the message of Jesus Christ.

We are not called to be hammers or swords but to be people that shine the light of Christ in our lives, teaching the gospel of Christ gently, in the hopes that God will lead people to repentance.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the teachings of Apostle Paul in what it means to teach the gospel, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Teach Unashamed

Today is June 8, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

When you think about who Apostle Paul was before he was a Christian; when you think about how he was a highly educated, wealthy, cultured, respected, powerful, and influential member of society. Then, when you take that picture of his life and compare it to how his life ended. To see how the choices he made - to teach the gospel of Christ to others - how that choice led him to be in jail and to face capital punishment.

You would think that he might have some regret. You might think he would have some shame in the choices he made that got him into that situation.

However, in his last letter that he writes, 2 Timothy, he makes it very clear: he is not ashamed of the choices he made; he is not ashamed of where teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ got him. If anything, he doubles down on his actions in the letter; boldly declaring how valuable the gospel is, how confident he is in it, and how he gladly suffers for it.

For Apostle Paul, the gospel was more important, more valuable, more of a priority than education, wealth, culture, respect, power, or influence. And, because of that, the gospel had to be kept, it had to be guarded, it had to be taught.

And, with his last letter being basically a death bed statement, his singular focus on the importance of the gospel above his own situation begs us to ask the question to ourselves: is the gospel of Jesus Christ that important to us? Is the gospel of Jesus Christ that valuable to us?

Do we have the same confidence that Apostle Paul has in the gospel? Are we keeping it? Are we guarding it? Are we teaching it? Or

are we ashamed of it?

...

God's blessing as you mediate on the gospel of Jesus Christ and how important it is in your life, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Our Memorials

Today is June 1, 2022

Welcome to June and your mid-week!

In many ways Jesus is our living memorial (1 Peter 2:4). And, like the memorials that God had asked his people to make in the Old Testament, Jesus serves the same function:

Jesus reminds us of God's work that he did for us in the past. The work to save us.
Jesus reminds us of our true identity because of God's work. That we are His people.
And, like other memorials in the Old Testament, knowing God's work and our true identity should spur us to continue to walk in faith.

That's how Jesus is our living memorial. But Jesus is not the only memorial God gives us. In many ways, we are like living memorials to each other (1 Peter 2:5).

The way God has and continues to work in our lives; the actions we do in faith that show our true identity in Christ, both serve as being a living memorial to others around us.

However, we can only be like a living memorial if we are seen; if we let our light shine before others (Matthew 5:16).

With so much of the world distracting us and feeding off of our insecurities and fears, it is good to stop and reflect upon our memorials that God gives us so that we can be vigilant in our faith.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the memorials God gives you, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Joy of the Lord is Our Strength

Today is May 25, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

In talking to God's people during their first worship service back from exile, Nehemiah connects the 'joy of the Lord' with 'strength.'

The 'joy' that they were experiencing was the joy of their salvation; it was the joy of God fulfilling his promise that he made in Jeremiah 29:10 to bring them back after 70 years. The reason Nehemiah connects that with strength is because God had made more promises; namely, in the very next verse, a promise to prosper them and give them hope and a future.

Having come back from exile to restart a nation meant that their current situation was incredible challenging. However, experiencing God's faithfulness and having the hope of God's other promises being fulfilled, meant they could face these challenges head on knowing that they would overcome them all in the Lord.

That's why the joy of the Lord was their strength. And that is the same joy and strength that we have in Jesus Christ.

God promised to give us a Messiah. God did. God promises us heaven and eternity and the resurrection. God will. As 2 Corinthians 1:20 tells us, God's promises are "Yes" in Christ.

That means...no matter how bad things are now, it will not last forever.
That means...the mistakes of the path, do not define our future.
That means...the anxieties and fears and worries that we have now are lying to us. Life will get better.
That means...the best is yet to come.

And the reason we have this joy and strength in Christ is because God loves us and wants our joy to be complete.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the joy of the Lord and the strength that comes from it, and I look forward to worshipping you this Sunday.
