TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 31, 2022

Charitable Harmony

Today is August 31, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the decisions of the Jerusalem Council was to ask Gentile converts to follow Jewish customs associated with food, sex, and blood.

The reason for this was not about salvation, it was about fellowship.

In essence, the Jerusalem Council was asking the Gentile converts who joined the church to show some cultural sensitivity to the Jewish converts so that they could have fellowship at the same table.

This was not about the majority exerting its power over the minority, this was the early church admitting the weakness of their predominantly Jewish congregation.

In short, they were asking for a little charity for the purpose of harmony.

Apostle Paul would later say that doing such actions was showing love to those who are 'weak of conscience.'
That, even though we know that we are free in Christ, if what I do causes someone else to stumble, I should not do it for their sake. As Apostle Paul said: "knowledge puffs up while love builds up."

For the early church, this kind of love done by the Gentiles was necessary in order to have unity amongst Christians with such differing cultural backgrounds. This is both something every English Ministry in a Korean American Immigrant Church context should abide by, and something we should all do when dealing with any Christian with a different cultural background than ourselves.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on charity and harmony, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 24, 2022

Diakoneo

Today is August 24, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

With our EM congregational meeting to elect our first deacon coming up this Sunday, this past Sunday we looked at the root word of ‘deacon’ - the Greek word ‘diakoneo.’

And what does ‘diakoneo’ mean? Well, it means ‘to serve,’ it means to go ‘through the dust’ or ‘through the dirt,’ and when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, using the principle of that word as a main focal point of his lesson on greatness, well then, that elevated the word to greatness.

Meaning, every time we ‘diakoneo,’ we remember the greatness of Jesus’ act of service for us. Moreover, every time we obey his commands to serve as he served, we are worshipping him.

Yes, ‘diakoneo’ might means to serve (with that act of service potentially being a dirty task to do) but, in Christ, it is also an act of remembrance, an act of obedience, and an act of worship. In that context it is an act of greatness.

And, who do we ‘diakoneo?’ Well, the word was first used by the early church to serve the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable in the community. While we are called to serve everyone (Galatians 5:3), when you think of who Jesus served, then starting with the poorest and the most vulnerable is a good place to start.

God’s blessing upon you as you mediate on the word ‘diakoneo’ and how you can apply that in your spheres of influence, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 17, 2022

Cheeky Evangelism

Today is August 17, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

The bible tells us that the wise are patient, that fools are quick tempered, and that peacemakers are children of God.

Jesus gives us the practical application of this by telling us to turn the other cheek in the face of personal insults. He doesn't say we can't be angry, but he does challenge us to not sin in our anger.

And the purpose? So that God can be revealed to people. In essence, turning the other cheek is evangelism.

Our God is a God who, in his grace, does not retaliate against us. Who did not ‘get even’ with us sinners but, rather, invited us into a relationship with himself. Who, in Jesus Christ, offers forgiveness.

When Jesus was arrested, he did not fight back or resist. He did not seek revenge or 'get even' on those who tried and crucified him. He did not retaliate but, instead, forgave those crucifying him.

Why?

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Yes, evangelism is what we say and do but, as Jesus teaches us, it is also what we do not do that is important.

And so, let us be patient and peacemakers and turn the other cheek so that more people would know who our God is.

God's blessing upon you as mediate on evangelism and your response to personal insults, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Sleeping In Peace

Today is August 10, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

Charles H. Spurgeon once said, “The sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which the child of God rests His head at night, giving perfect peace.”

If only it were so easy to trust in the sovereignty of God each night, then none of us would be tossing and turning from all the anxiety and stress that we face.

However, the beauty of King David's example is that he shows us the way to ultimately trust in the sovereignty of God and to find that rest. And what does King David show us?

Well, he shows us screaming and yelling and wrestling with the Lord. He shows us what it takes to remember who we confessed as being Lord over us. He shows us how it is a chapter to chapter journey; a day to day journey. That, on some days, it is the Lord that sustains us, not the circumstances of our situations. However, on other days, we forget and need to be crying out to the Lord again.

But, ultimately, King David does show us how the sovereignty of God gives us rest. When we ultimately come to the Lord with a contrite and humble heart, acknowledging his lordship and love for us, then we can patiently, in faith, trust that God is working all things for good and that a harvest of joy will come.

From there, then we can lie down in peace and sleep.

God's blessing as you lift up your stresses and anxieties to our Lord, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Crying to the Lord

Today is August 3, 2022

Welcome to August and your mid-week!

In the 1930's Fletcher and Munson discovered that our ears hear the frequencies between 2k-4k louder than what they are delivered at. In essence, our ears were made to hear the cries of our children.

As children of God, wouldn't it make sense then that the Lord hears our cries. That, he wants to hear our cries.

And crying to the Lord is more than just about receiving God's help. When we cry to the Lord we are reminding ourselves of God's mercy, refocusing our perspective to a Godly perspective, and putting our hope not in ourselves but to our Father in heaven.

That, in turn, helps us to give credit to the Lord for every good and perfect thing, and makes us more compassionate to those around us.

Therefore, let us cry to the Lord more, for that is what children of God do.

God's blessing upon you as cry to the Lord, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
