Charitable Harmony
Today is August 31, 2022
Welcome to your mid-week!
One of the decisions of the Jerusalem Council was to ask Gentile converts to follow Jewish customs associated with food, sex, and blood.
The reason for this was not about salvation, it was about fellowship.
In essence, the Jerusalem Council was asking the Gentile converts who joined the church to show some cultural sensitivity to the Jewish converts so that they could have fellowship at the same table.
This was not about the majority exerting its power over the minority, this was the early church admitting the weakness of their predominantly Jewish congregation.
In short, they were asking for a little charity for the purpose of harmony.
Apostle Paul would later say that doing such actions was showing love to those who are 'weak of conscience.' That, even though we know that we are free in Christ, if what I do causes someone else to stumble, I should not do it for their sake. As Apostle Paul said: "knowledge puffs up while love builds up."
For the early church, this kind of love done by the Gentiles was necessary in order to have unity amongst Christians with such differing cultural backgrounds. This is both something every English Ministry in a Korean American Immigrant Church context should abide by, and something we should all do when dealing with any Christian with a different cultural background than ourselves.
God's blessing upon you as you meditate on charity and harmony, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
