TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 1, 2021

The Uncomfortable Mission

Today is September 1, 2021

Welcome to September and your mid-week!

The Korean American church would not exist without guys like Karl Gützlaff, Robert Thomas, and Horace Allen doing missionary work in Korea. That's right, without a German, Welsh, and an American from Ohio, we would not be here.

And, thinking about it more, those of us who attend this church would not be here if not for the countless men and women who chose to say yes to the command that all Christians have been given.

And that command, as intimidating and uncomfortable as it might be, is to go and make disciples of all nations, to be God's witnesses even to the ends of the earth. That is what Jesus directly states in Matthew 28:19 and in Acts 1:8. That is what Jesus commands us to do.

The challenge is how. Especially in the pandemic. How do we begin to do this? Well, this is where Jesus' example shows us the way.

Jesus interacted with so many different types of people. Jesus interacted with adults, countrymen, the uneducated, the unethical, and rebels. He interacted with kids and elderly, orphans and widows, the rich and the poor. He interacted with those who were mentally ill and those who were sick and disabled. Jesus interacted with leaders and outcasts, foreigners and criminals.

And how did he interact with them? Well, some he talked with, others he helped, others he showed an amazing amount of restraint, all so that they could see the love of God for them. Sure, at times it was direct. Other times it was subtle. But the point is that Jesus shows us many ways to do missions.

Are challenge is to obey. That, when we hit that uncomfortable feeling - that spiritual war between saying 'yes' and 'no' - we need to say yes.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on 'missions' and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

- Rev. Frank Kim

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST, 25 2021

The Uncomfortable Feeling

Today is August 25, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

In multiple letters from Apostle Paul, we see him longing for the church. Even when he is spiritually content, when he is separate from the church, he misses it. His heart aches for the church.

And, if you think about the biblical church, it makes sense why he would miss it. The biblical church was where Apostle Paul was loved and encouraged; it was his biggest cheerleader, a place where he served and was served, gave instructions and was mentored. It was a place of commitment and honor; kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

This is why, when the church is not with Apostle Paul, he longs for it.

Apostle Peter tells us that we, the church, are like living stones that make up the spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5). Meaning, when a stone is missing, we should feel a draft. We, like Apostle Paul, should feel it when the church - even if that is one person - is missing.

But do we?

In the book of Revelation, Jesus rebukes a church for being too comfortable. They were a church that wanted to be known as Christians but who did not want to act like the biblical church. But being comfortable is not what the church is supposed to be. That is not the example of what God shows us.

When we sinned against God and separated from him, God did everything he could do to bring us back. He did not give up on us and rest in comfort. No. He longed for us and pursued us. And, even though we failed over and over again, he did not quit, doing everything he possible could - to the point of sending his son to where we are and dying for our sins - to bring us back.

This is the heart of God and what he wants his church to be.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the concept of longing and being the church, and I look forward to worshiping you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 18, 2021

The Uncomfortable Way

Today is August 18, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

I don't think any one of us likes to be in an uncomfortable situation. If anything, we tend to avoid them at all costs. However, uncomfortable situations are actually a great opportunity to appreciate and worship God.

When we fail in uncomfortable situations - when we become impatient or frustrated or angry - that is an opportunity to evaluate ourselves. Now, in the heat of the moment that is tough, however Jesus reminds us in his word that it is in those situations where we should pay attention to the sin that is being exposed in us. 'To look at the plank in our own eye (Matthew 7:3) and to think about our own sin before throwing the first stone (John 8:7).

By recognizing the sin that is being exposed in those uncomfortable situations, not only can we know what we need the Spirit to work on in us, but we can gain a more personal appreciation for Jesus' faithfulness in that area of our failure.

In essence, we are knowing how much God loves us by experiencing how unloving we are.

This is one of the reasons why Jesus calls us to be uncomfortable - to carry our own cross-  and why being in uncomfortable situations where are weakness are exposed is actually a good thing.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the benefits of being uncomfortable, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 11, 2021

Heading Toward Our Cross

Today is August 11, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the difficult concepts Apostle Paul tried to teach the church of Corinth was how human weakness and God's power were both sides of the same coin.

For the church of Corinth, power was separate from weakness. If anything, weakness - whether that comes via hardship or persecution - was to be avoided at all costs. Obtaining power, for them, was the absence of weakness.

However, God told Apostle Paul that His power was perfected in weakness (2 Corinthians 10:9). Meaning they were connected. And the precedent of that is in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' weakest moment - dying on a cross - God's power become evident to the world. And that display of power is what changed the course of eternity for people.

So, if experiencing personal weakness showed the power of God to people so that they could be saved, Apostle Paul's choice was to experience weakness every time. This is why he writes in 2 Corinthians 12:10:

2 Corinthians 12:10
That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

For the sake of Christ, for the progression of the gospel not to be hindered, for the power of God to be fully displayed to people, Apostle Paul chose to heads towards his cross, knowing that his pain would not be wasted (Romans 8:28).

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the connection between your weaknesses and God's power, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 4, 2021

Giving Glory to God

Today is August 4, 2021

Welcome to August and your mid-week!

As Olympic athletes honor their country, so we, as spiritual athletes, should honor God. However, instead of giving praise, Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 10, gives us a different way to honor God: selflessness.

For Apostle Paul, giving glory to God meant using the Christian liberty we have in Christ to deny ourselves so that some can be saved. In fact, Apostle Paul tells us that he made himself like a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.

Giving glory to God was not an individual action we do toward God but an ambition lived out in relation to others - to both unbelievers and believers - building one another and living among unbelievers with the goal of salvation.

Meaning, giving glory to God is about having a careful, gospel-centered decision making ethic so that the progress of the gospel would not be hindered in any way - even by you.

In these times where we talk about our personal faith and where we internalize our convictions, Apostle Paul reminds us that God is about the external and the public - about bringing as many people to know him as possible. And how we help in that process gives glory to God.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on what it means to be a spiritual athlete and what it means to give glory to God, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.
