TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 23, 2021

Greetings

Today is June 23, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday was the first Sunday in 15 months that we had onsite worship for all ministries. 1 year and 3 months before re-opening our doors to everyone. And, since it has been so long, I want to reiterate and emphasize the word:

Welcome. You are all most definitely welcome.

The early church use to greet one another with the word 'shalom.' That word meant 'peace,' 'complete,' and 'whole.' And, when used as a greeting, it was to extend that hope to the person. That, as they came to church, that they would feel peace here, that they would experience feeling whole here.

However, very early on, that greeting had to change. With the persecution of the church by the Roman Empire it was hard to experience earthly 'peace' anywhere. And so, instead of 'shalom,' the early church greeted one another with the phrase:

'Maranatha' aka 'Come, O Lord' or 'the Lord is coming.'

If they could not find peace on this earth the early church knew that they could find peace in Jesus. That, with the 2nd coming of Christ, the Prince of Peace would establish an everlasting peace which would bring shalom to mankind, man and God, and the whole world.

And so, as we open up church again, I want to say 'welcome' and I hope that you experience 'shalom' here. However, if times are still difficult, then 'maranatha.'

God's blessing and protection over you and your family as you think about the peace of the Lord, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

  • Mask Requirement for Worship
    • For the sake of all members, the session of our church has asked that all attendees wear masks during the worship service until further notice.
  • VBS Prayer Request
    • VBS is this week (Tues-Sat). Please pray for Pastor Haein, Director Anna, all teachers and volunteers, and all children who will be attending.
  • Ministry Council Introduction
    • The EM Ministry Council represents EM members and conducts affairs related to the ministry, as well as an acting bridge between the EM and the KM and Session. Our goal is to keep the congregation in the loop on EM affairs. You can find the names of each council members on the back of the bulletin, so if need be, please reach out to any of these council members for voicing concerns, comments, questions, or ideas for the EM. Every month, we will have the last month's Ministry Council minutes available for viewing at Pastor Frank's office. We will also be sharing an overview of those minutes once a month. Also, if anyone is interested in participating or being a part of the EM Ministry Council, please reach out to Pastor Frank.

Continuing Announcements

  • Cell Group Leaders Needed!
    • We are looking to create a ‘Singles & Professional’ (S&P for short) cell group to launch in September and we need leaders!
    • Needs the group have made:
      • Someone who understands this particular stage of life, though does not feel the need to teach what is the "right" way to live this stage of life
      • Someone who is hospitable and able to create a space (both digital and personal) for members to gather and do life together, though not necessarily in their own home
      • Because it has been over a year since members have had a community, it is important for the leader to allow time for fellowship so that the members can get reacquainted
      • The leader should have a good rapport with most of the members
      • Ideally, the group would be led by 2 people (1 woman and 1 man), either a husband and wife or 2 single members; this will ensure that if there are deeper conversations that take place, members can have someone they may feel more comfortable with
    • Expectations of the leaders:
      • A space where our members can be unapologetic and share about their experiences; re-establishing a cell and community for young singles
      • A community where members can be encouraged by peers

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 16, 2021

Greater Work

Today is June 16, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Can you imagine what it would have been like for the disciples to see Jesus die on the cross and to see your fellow disciples scatter? You would have thought that the work of Christ was over, that the movement was done, that everything was finished.

However, can you imagine what it would have been like to see Jesus come back, to see him ascend, to receive the Holy Spirit and, through that empowerment, to see that the work that Jesus did was not over but that it was only beginning? Can you imagine the help and the healing and the hope that you witness through Jesus not only continue through you but reach more people, exponentially so?

Like, at Jesus' ascension, Jesus' followers numbered in the hundreds. By Acts 2:41, there were thousands. By the end of Acts, Christianity had reached Rome. By the turn of the 4th century Christianity would be the official religion of the Roman Empire. Today, almost a 3rd of all people - billions - are Christian.

All that done by Jesus working through his disciples.

This is why Jesus told his disciples at the last supper that they would do 'greater things' after he went to be with the Father. He knew that, through his disciples, he could do far greater work then what he could do as a man. All for the glory of God.

As Matthew 5:16 reminds us:

Matthew 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven
.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the 'greater works' God has called all of us to do for his glory, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 9, 2021

Self...Control

Today is June 9, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of Apostle Peter's top 8 virtues to have to be an effective and productive Christian is 'self-control.' And I believe he put it in his list because he experienced the pain of not having it.

Growing up as a Jew, Apostle Peter would have known about King Solomon and his book 'Ecclesiastes' which taught how indulging in this world does not satisfy. Apostle Peter was also taught directly from Jesus that we were made to indulge in God. Despite this, Apostle Peter still did not show a lot of self-control in his time with Jesus. He was the impulsive disciple, usually the first to act without thinking, and the worst indulgence he had was in his own understanding of what he thought the Messiah was supposed to do.

Apostle Peter was stuck in his own echo chamber. And the consequence of his lack of self-control was evident when he wept bitterly from denying Jesus three times.

No wonder, ~30 years later, facing his death and sharing his top 8 virtues to the church, he includes self-control.

If only Apostle Peter had paused and let God in. If only he had said no to himself and said yes to God. This is what self-control is all about and why Apostle Peter includes it in his list of virtues to be an effective and productive Christian.

It is his plea to the church to learn from his mistakes. Meaning, it is his plea to us.

God's blessings and protection over you and your family as you ponder and wrestle with the spiritual fruit of 'self-control', and I look forward to worshiping with you online or onsite this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 02, 2021

Welcome

Today is June 2, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

As an Asian American I understand what it means to be a treated as a perpetual foreigner. Even though I was born in Virginia, speak perfect English, pay my taxes, and do my best to be a citizen of this country, I have been told to 'go back to China' or 'you don't belong here.'

Being a perpetual foreigner means never being welcomed no matter what you do. And, in many ways, that's what all of us are, spiritually.

As much as we want this world to be our home. As much as we adapt and assimilate and conform to this world, this world reminds us every day that we are not welcomed here. Every act of injustice or suffering or death is a reminder that this is not our home. It is why our flesh and souls cry out to the living God and not to this cold and uncaring world. It is why the bible calls us aliens and foreigners.

Our first home was Eden. Our first relationship was with God. That is the place and the person where we are truly welcomed. And, ever since we sinned and were banished from that place, our soul longs to return.

Thanks be to God that he gives us a way back through Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God that, just like the prodigal son, we are welcomed back with open arms. What we could not do, God does for us. Through his wounds we are healed. Through his wounds we are welcomed.

This is why Hebrews 13:14 reminds us to 'look forward to the home yet to come' because we know that it is in that heavenly home where we are truly accepted, truly loved, and truly welcomed.

God's blessings upon you as you mediate on the actions of God and our heavenly home, and I look forward to worshiping with you online or onsite this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - May 26, 2020

Speak

Today is May 26, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday Pastor Diana preached on Pentecost and how we all have the gift of the Spirit, have been called to be part of something supernatural, and have been called to have a prophetic voice aka to speak God's truth.

And it was a good reminder of the power that we all have: the power of words.

Whoever said ‘sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me’ is a liar. Why? Because words can hurt. Words have power. We have seen mere words on social media start a revolution that changed the face of a country and started the Arab Spring. We have seen mere words spoken from a podium in front of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 and inspire a movement. We have seen how mere words can shape a nation.

That’s the power that mere words have.

And this power was given freely to us by God. He could have made us mute. He could have limited our expressions of communication. He could have regulated or limited; shortened or simplified; cut off or simply not give and, yet, He didn’t.

No.

He gives us the power to say words; the power to speak.

So, what do we do with this great power God has given us? Well, we speak words of arrogance. We speak words of gossip. We speak words of perversion and of division; of corruption and of destruction; of lies and of hatred.

Is this what God intended when he gave us this great gift?

No.

When God spoke, life was created. Life. And this is the same power God gives us through the gift of speech, the power to speak spiritual life to people. We have, right now, the power to build and to help; to strengthen and to encourage; to give hope and to express love to people who are spiritually dying.

That’s why we’ve been given this power to speak.

So let us not fight or argue or tear each other down with petty rivalry and comparisons. No. Our words were meant for far more greater purposes.

God's blessings upon you as you wrestle with the prophetic voice God has given you, and I look forward to seeing you onsite or online this Sunday.
