TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 14, 2021

Promised Restoration

Today is April 14, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

There are always moments of joy that we can find in this world. Whether that is being respected by people, enjoying the fruit of the land, experiencing satisfying work, or having fellowship with God.

However, this world is broken by sin. No matter how much we ignore it or distance ourselves from it, we cannot escape the effects of sin on this world or the judgment of God in response to it. There will always be another pandemic, there will always be injustice, there will always be death.

The evidence of sin is everywhere.

The message of hope from God in the book of Joel is that, if we just return back to him, not only will he relent in sending his judgment, but he will restore what sin has broken. In fact, God promises that we will never have to experience this broken world ever again.

Joel 2:25a
“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten..."

That’s the promise of the Lord. And the evidence of his promise is shown by Jesus’ work on the cross and his resurrection.

Pandemics may come and go. Evil may seem insurmountable. However, if we draw near to God and cry out to him, God will restore us. God will restore what sin has taken away.

God’s blessing and protection over you and your family as you mediate on the promise of God, and I look forward to worshipping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 7, 2021

Jesus Victorious

Today is April 7, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

When you look at the last hours of Jesus, starting from the night before his death to his death by crucifixion, you will see Jesus experience the worst that this world has to offer.

Jesus was misunderstood, unsupported, denied, betrayed, abandoned, accused, afflicted, and crucified.

However, the moment he came back from the dead showed us that he overcome this world; that, despite even death, Jesus is victorious. And the hope for us who believe in him is that, in him, we also have that same victory. That, no matter the worst that this world offers us, in Christ, we are also victorious. As 1 John 5:4-5 says:

1 John 5:4-5
for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

This is why we celebrate Easter and why it is so important to remember what Jesus Christ did for us. No matter what we face here, we know that we can overcome it because Jesus Christ overcame death, overcame the worst this world gave him, and arose, victorious.

God's blessings and protection over you and your family as you meditate on the victory of Jesus Christ over death and what that means for you, and I look forward to worshipping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 1, 2021

Jesus Afflicted

Today is April 1, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

Passion week is always the time where we reflect upon the sacrifice of Jesus. And that sacrifice is more than just his death, but includes his suffering. Jesus' suffering and death was the price needed to atone for our sins.

This is why it is important to reflect on all the ways Jesus was afflicted because, understanding the cost of something helps us to appreciate the impact of it.

So, these are the ways Jesus was afflicted:

  • Jesus was misunderstood, unsupported, betrayed, and abandoned by his disciples.
  • Jesus was falsely accused by the Sanhedrin. They struck him with their fists, slapped him, and spat upon him.
  • Jesus was tried before Herod where Herod and his soldiers mocked and ridiculed him.
  • Jesus was tried before Pilate where he was sentenced to be flogged. Most likely Jesus was given 39 lashes by a whip made of leather strips, with metal balls and bone fragments interwoven into it to bruise and cut into the flesh.
  • After that, Jesus was tried before Pilate where he empowered the people - the same people who had welcomed Jesus 5 days earlier - to sentence Jesus. They choose Barabbas, a murderer, to be set free and Jesus to be crucified.
  • Jesus was then stripped, given a robe, and a crown of thorns was placed on his head. Jesus was then mocked, spit upon, and stuck on the head over and over again.
  • Jesus was then forced to carry his cross (whether just the ~100 pound cross beam or the full ~300 pounds) the ~2000 feet to his crucifixion. Having been flogged the cross was too heavy and he would be given help by Simon, a Cyrene.
  • Upon arriving at Golgotha Jesus was stripped naked and crucified.
  • While being crucified, Jesus bore the sins of the world.
  • While being crucified, Jesus was mocked and insulted by chief priests, elders, teachers of the law, and people passing on by.
  • At ~3pm, Jesus was stabbed by a spear where he eventually 'gave up his spirit' and died.

This is what Jesus was afflicted with. And, knowing Jesus and his suffering is at the center of what it means to be a Christian. It shows us the devastating nature of our sin as well as God's great love for us. All that we are commanded to do - missions, forgiveness, love, etc - comes from who Jesus is and what he does for us.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family as you mediate and reflect on Passion Week and I look forward to worshiping with you online for our Good Friday Worship service and our Joint Easter Service.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 24, 2021

Jesus Accused

Today is March 24, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

The false accusations that were thrown at Jesus are what led to the violence he experienced, culminating in his death. That's what Jesus experienced as he went through multiple unjust courts in the early morning of Good Friday.

Jesus experienced the worst situation, in the worst setting, ending in the worst result.

Why did Jesus experience that? So that, when false accusations are thrown at us, we would know, confidently, that Jesus understands us. What's more, we know that Jesus does more than understand us. Having come to where we are, he knows our perspective, the hardships we face, and he does something about it.

Jesus is our advocate who stands with us from a place of compassion. So, while others may not listen or understand or believe our perspective or do anything about it, we can always find peace in Christ knowing that he does. As John 16 reminds us:

John 16:33
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

God's blessing and protection upon you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 17, 2021

Jesus Abandoned

Today is March 17, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

I believe the pain of abandonment is something that is brought on by original sin. And what does God do about that? Well,

God responds.

One of the reasons God sent
his one and only son to us to die for our sins, was to show us that he has not abandoned us. This is why, in scripture, over and over again, he tells us that he will never leave us nor forsake us. This is why, in scripture, he tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.

What is more, in the bible it tells us that the day of the Lord will arrive where we will be redeemed and restored. Where 'those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy' (Psalm 126:5). Where God will 'bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes' (Isaiah 61:2).

These are the actions of a loving God who does all that he can do in response to the abandonment caused by sin. This is God's character. While the world may abandon us, God does not.

God responds.

And this is shown to us in Christ Jesus where, even when his disciples abandoned him, Jesus came to them and forgave them, restoring them back to who they once were. This is what God does for us if we choose to draw near to him.

As it says in James 4:8a

James 4:8a
Come near to God and he will come near to you.

No matter how bad things get, God does not abandon us. No matter what we have done, God does not abandon us. So then, no matter what this world throws at us, let us always remember to draw near to the Lord because

God will respond.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshipping with you online this Sunday.
