TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 3, 2021

Walking Amidst Anger

Today is February 3, 2021

Welcome to February and your mid-week!

Righteous anger looks very different than emotional anger. Yes, we may think Jesus flipping tables looks similar to people throwing and breaking things in anger, however, in closer inspection, it is not.

Jesus' actions were not for himself but for the sake of the gentiles who were trying to worship.
Jesus' actions were not hating upon a person or wishing someone ill will but was targeted toward the sinful behavior - the true injustice taking place - coming from a place of love and spiritual concern.
Jesus' anger had the right duration, not leading to bitterness or passive aggressive grudge holding.
Jesus' anger was controlled. And we know that it was controlled because each day, after the day he drove those who were selling, Jesus preached in the courts and no one could find any reason to arrest him. This meant that not only did Jesus flip the tables in a non-violent or damaging way, but those who were being driven out knew that they should not have been there in the first place.

All of us are called to have righteous indignation. Just as God is righteously angry every day (Psalm 7:11), so should we be. With so much injustice and immorality and evil in this world it should be hard not too. However, all of us are guilty of getting complacent to it. Of not caring and getting use to the suffering we see every day.

Jesus' example reminds us that we cannot be selfishly passive against such things. That, instead, we must be vigilant to look for every opportunity to express righteous indignation. Righteous indignation is what moves us to act justly, to carry the burdens of other, to preach the gospel of Jesus, and to bring to all people the freedom and truth found in God's word. Righteous indignation is what compels us to be healers and helpers, restorers and reconciles, advocates and rescuers and true Christians. And that's the point.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family as you wrestle with righteous anger and I look forward to worshipping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 27, 2021

Walking Amidst Frustration

Today is January 27, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

David being chased by King Saul and forced to live in caves even though David had been anointed by God and knew he would be the next king, must have been a frustrating situation. It would be like me giving you an ice cream cone and telling you not to eat it...for 7-10 years.

And yet, how was David able to walk the righteous path in the midst of that frustration? How did he not lose his cool? 'Not sin against King Saul or anyone else for that matter?

Well, David had developed a pattern of seeking the Lord. Even before this triggering moment in his life, he always went to the Lord. In fact, even before King Saul unexpectedly showed up in the cave David was hiding in, David had written a prayer to God recommitting to seeking him and his action in the midst of his frustration:

Psalm 142:5
"I cry to you, Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

Since David was seeking the Lord regularly, when the opportunity to sin presented itself, David was able to fall back on what he knew, humble himself, and not sin.

Sometimes we wonder why we are asked to do the same spiritual things over and over again. Why read the bible? Why pray? Why attend worship? Why try to have fellowship with the community of believers? Well, sometimes the reason it is not something immediately evident or beneficial. Sometimes it is only when certain incidents happen that the fruit of that consistency shows - not in what you get, but what you do not do.

God's blessings and protection over you and your family as you wrestle with the frustrations of this world and I look forward to seeing you all online this Sunday.

Walking Amidst Uncertainty

Today is January 20, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday Pastor Diana preached on Elisha and 'The Widow's Olive Oil' as found in 2 Kings 4:1-7.

What challenged me the most was how, in the face of the uncertainty that the widow was experiencing, Elisha didn't just come and help her. No. He asked her to participate.

In that midst of uncertainty, we still have a responsibility to act.

And, from the widows faithfulness, she was able to witness the creativity of God to help her; a help that was not anticipated or expected.

Her experience reminded me of Proverbs 16:9 which states:

Proverbs 16:9
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

Therefore, let us follow in the widow's example. Let us participate in the plans of God, walk the course - no matter how uncertain - before us, and trust in the Lord as he establishes our steps.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 13, 2020

Walking Amidst Doubt

Today is January 13, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Moses first tried to free his people, he took matters into his own hands and failed, which led to him being exiled. With that kind of failure you can imagine why, when God asked him to free his people 40 years later, Moses said no...three times.

Moses had every reason to believe that he would fail just as he had before.

However, after God's continuing reassurance and his brother Aaron to come along with him, Moses was finally able to say yes. And, from the decision, Moses would become the Moses we famously know him for: the staff wielding, 10 plague flinging, red sea parting, 'let my people go' saying Moses.

Now, when it comes to us acting on the convictions of God, we might have had a Moses like moment where we tried and failed. And, maybe, because of that failure, we haven't tried again...for 40 years. And maybe, like Moses, we are full of excuses.

However the word of God tells us that doubt is the destroyer of life. That we need to combat doubt with faith. And, just like Moses, faith is obtained by hearing from the word of God again and again; being reassured by what God has done in the past, what he has promised us for the present, and what we can expect from Him in the future. That is how we overcome doubt.

And, if we still have difficulty to say yes to God, this is where we need to have the strength to ask for help; where we need to have our own Aaron to walk along side of us.

God's blessing and protection over you as you wrestle with your doubt and God's convictions in your life, and I look forward to worshiping with you online next week.

Walking Amidst the Storm

Today is January 6, 2021

Welcome to 2021 and your mid-week!

In Matthew 14:29, Peter walking on the water in the middle of the storm was not a leap of faith.

Being part of the inner circle of Jesus meant having a front row seat to the miracles and healings being done by Jesus. Peter had seen hundreds of people put their trust in Jesus and hundreds of people experience a miracle. He was a witness to it all. Matthew 14 is when Peter finally became a participant.

And, it wasn't like he was doing something that had never been done before. Jesus was doing what he was asking to do. Jesus was the example he was looking at and was asking to follow.

And, note, Peter wasn't asking what the other disciples thought - welcoming their most likely discouragement -  nor was he over thinking the situation or making excuses to not do it.

All of his experiences and seeing the example of Jesus before him had led him to this opportunity to finally engage in his faith. And, what happened?

Peter walked on the water amidst the storm.

God's blessing upon you as you build up the courage to do the same this year, and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.
