TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 10, 2021

Jesus Betrayed

Today is March 10, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

What always amazes me about the disciples' interaction at the last supper, was their cluelessness toward Judas. There were so many hints. So many little moments. If you were playing Mafia or One Night Ultimate Werewolf or Among Us, you would have totally voted out Judas. But there was no hint of intuition from the other eleven disciples. No.

And the fact that Jesus knew Judas would betray him. The other eleven not having a clue meant that Jesus must have treated Judas the same as everyone else. Despite knowing Judas would betray him, Jesus showed him the same love as everyone else to the point where no one at that table even thought to think that Judas would be the betrayer.

That always amazes me.

In many ways, we are like Judas. We betray Jesus all the time. Whether for personal gain, in acts of rebellion, or by placing our own expectations on what Jesus should be doing, we betray him. But, just as Jesus treated Judas, so he treats us. Jesus loves us, shows mercy on us, is slow to anger, and waits on us.

And what is he waiting for?

Well, Jesus is hoping that we do not follow Judas's betrayal to his end but follow Peter's path of betrayal toward his end; a path that led to repentance and restoration.

Only in experiencing that can we begin to try to show that same kind of love to those who betrayed us.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the betrayal of Judas and I look forward to worshipping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 3, 2021

Jesus Denied

Today is March 3, 2021

Welcome to March and your mid-week!

When Jesus was told 'no' from the Father, he did not end the conversation. He did not rage quit or walk away or had has faith broken. No. When faced with a 'no' from the Father, Jesus continued to pray. And he continued to pray until he was able to submit to the will of the Father. That's what Jesus did when his request was denied.

I always find it striking how, before Jesus was arrested, the last thing Jesus wanted to do was pray. That's how important prayer was to him. More than sleep or food or company. Jesus wanted to pray.

And, no one wants to hear 'no' from the Lord. All of us have hopes and dreams and wants and needs that we view as important or necessary.

However, sometimes to get to where God wants us to get requires us to go through disappointment. Sometimes the journey we are asked to take, takes us through the valley of death. Sometimes we need to hear that 'no' from the Lord, even if we don't like it.

And, in those cases, I pray that we can follow the example Jesus showed us at Gethsemane.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshipping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER -FEBRUARY 24, 2020

Jesus Unsupported

Today is February 24, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Jesus was praying in Gethsemane to the Father in what Luke 22 describes as "in anguish", why did Jesus stop that conversation multiple times to go back to his disciples to check on them? We can understand the 3rd time waking them up because the soldiers were coming to arrest him. However, why wake them up to teach them that 1st time? Why go back that 2nd time? Especially since, after asking for help, they had failed him by sleeping?

Because, part of loving someone is giving them the opportunity to love you.

In the middle of an emotionally taxing situation, Jesus still found the time to love his disciples even at the expense of feeling more unsupported by them. Jesus actions at Gethsemane not only remind us to seek the Lord for help but teaches us that asking for help from others does not have to be viewed as an act of weakness but can be seen as an act of love.

God's blessings and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 17, 2020

Jesus Misunderstood

Today is February 17, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

If you were to grade the 12 disciples on how much they understood the mission of Jesus before his resurrection, you would give them an 'F.'

3 years of teachings and miracles and analogies and illustrations and object lessons and interactive elements and even directly telling them:

Mark 10:33-34
“We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”

And, despite all that, the disciples still did not understand the mission of Jesus as shown by them abandoning Jesus and denying him when he got arrested.

That's an 'F' in my book.

And yet, despite their misunderstanding, Jesus continued to show patience and grace and love, prioritizing their relationship despite their misunderstandings. Jesus never face palmed, gave blank stares, showed frustration, or raged quit.

No.

Jesus knew his disciples. He knew their difficulties and challenges and so he tried and tried and tried again.

In many ways we are like the disciples. How long did we misunderstood Jesus? How much do we still misunderstand about him? But, God knows us and shows that same patience and grace to us as he teaches us - in numerous and creative ways - who he is.

Therefore, if we have found any joy and peace in knowing Jesus, any comfort in him knowing us completely, then his example is the example we should follow to those who misunderstand us.

God's protection and blessing over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you all online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 10, 2020

Seeking to Know God's Greatness

Today is February 10, 2021

Welcome to your mid-week!

God's greatness is both incomparable and indescribable.

God is infinite and Triune. He is the creator of the world yet not confined by time and space. He is omniscient and omnipresent, omnipotent and omni-benevolent. Who can you compare him to?

And how do you describe his greatness? Apostle Paul, trying to describe just one aspect of God's greatness - his great power - wrote that God's power was "far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come." (Ephesians 1:19-21)

You can almost feel his struggle in trying to describe God's great power. Imagine trying to describe every aspect of God's greatness.

God's greatness is indescribable and incomparable. And yet, even though it is hard to fathom, it is essential that we seek it because seeking God's greatness will definitively show that God loves us.

Unlike other great figures, God does not keep himself at a distance. God does not live in a home on a mountain surrounded by walls and shrubbery and an agent.

No.

God, who is so great to form the universe by speaking, chooses to create us by hand. Our great God chooses to put his fingers in the dust and dirt to form us; to come to the earth and then face to face to breathe life into us.

As Ephesians 1:4 says: "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love"

If we compare the size of God loving us to the size of the universe loving the earth, it would be like us loving a spec of dust, less than a spec of dust actually. How ridiculous would it be for us to love a spec of dust? But that is God's amazing, radical, & crazy great love for us. And that love is only understood when we seek to know God's greatness.

God's blessing and protection over you and your families and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
