Passion Week: Considering Jesus

Today is April 5, 2023

Welcome to April and your mid-week!

For Christians, Passion Week is a Holy Week.

It is the week we remember the coming of Jesus into Jerusalem aka Palm Sunday. And, by the end of the week, he will be betrayed and arrested, trialed on 3 different occasions, where he will eventually be found guilty, sentenced to death, and that death will be carried out via crucifixion just outside of the city.

But, the reason we celebrate this week and not mourn it, is that, by this Sunday – Easter Sunday, Jesus will rise again – showing the world that

what he said is true and that the victory he promised is real.

That is how important the resurrection is. And, from that new perspective – we are able to see God’s true intent for sending Jesus to us, that, as that one praise song tells us…

Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free

God shows his love for us this week. And that is why we call this week Passion week.

And so, before we run the race marked out for us, let us consider Jesus this week. Let us consider his actions. Let us consider his love. For, this is what Passion Week calls us to do.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on Jesus and Passion Week, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Conclusion of Faith

Today is March 29, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

After the author of Hebrews spends all of chapter 11 - 40 verses - talking about what active faith looks like, he then concludes by giving us an analogy of what it means to act in faith. Acting in faith is like

running a race.

And, by using an analogy, our author is giving us our motivators to act in faith. We have a cloud of witnesses that should inspire, Jesus' example that we can follow after, and a prize that lasts forever.

What great motivators. You would think that, after that, our author would then end his lesson on faith with a cry of 'Let's go!' or 'Fighting!' But, no, that's not what he does. In a surprising move he ends with a word; a phrase not used anywhere else in the New Testament. He ends his lesson with this last challenge:

Consider Christ.

The word 'consider' in the original language connotes a process of serious thinking. A time where a matter is weighed with the utmost care through comparison, reflection, and conclusion.

The bible makes it clear that we are to examine ourselves and test ourselves to see whether we are really in the faith. Because, if we are in the faith, we will feel compelled to act in faith. But, living in this broken world with the temptation of our flesh is challenging, and acting in faith can sometimes be incredibly difficult.

And so, after all this talk about why we should act in faith, our author challenges us to pause and truly consider Christ so that we would not grow weary and lose heart in the race of faith God calls all of his children to run.

And I can't think of a better time to consider Christ then in Passion Week, which starts this Sunday.

God's blessing upon you as you consider Christ, mediate on what faith is, and the race we are called to run, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Summary of Faith

Today is March 22, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the most striking things of Hebrews 11 discussion of faith is the 'why' we act in faith.

We do not act in faith with the expectation of receiving prosperity or success or to claim something for ourselves. The results of faith will vary dramatically and there is no guarantee that what we hope for will happen no matter our sincerity or maturity in the Lord.

As Hebrews 11:35 tells us, some will experience miracles for their faith, others will experience torture. Meaning, what we get out of faith should not be the reason to act in faith.

We act in faith because this is how we actively wait for the promises of God to be realized. This is how we do the good work God has created in advance for us to do. And by acting in faith we are justifying the faith of those who came before us, encouraging the faith of those around us, and are paving the way for the faith of those who will come after us.

This is why we act in faith. And this is how the past, present, and future become united by faith; how, as our author alludes to in Hebrews 11:40, we are made perfect in faith together.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on why we act in faith, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 15, 2023

The Faith of Rahab

Today is March 15, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Rahab's act of faith was more than a calculated choice to save her and her family. It was an act that went against everything she was raised not to do.

Culturally, as a Canaanite and citizen of Jericho, Rahab wasn't supposed to have anything to do with God's people.
As a woman in the highly patriarchal society of that time, Rahab wasn't supposed to speak or ask, let alone give advice to any man, let alone God's people.
As a prostitute, knowing how God's people would view her, Rahab wasn't supposed to have anything to do with God's people.

And yet, despite cultural and societal and moral pressures, Rahab acted in faith. Instead of listening to the expectations of her culture or society, or allowing her own sin and shame to stop her from acting, Rahab, instead, sought after the God of Joshua who, as she says in Joshua 2:11 "...is God in heaven above and on the earth below."

That act of faith is what she was commended for. Above Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah and David and Samuel and all the prophets - it is Rahab's faith that is mentioned in Hebrews 11. And that is the faith we need to pass forward.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on Rahab's faith and the challenges to your own faith, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 8, 2023

The Faith of God's People

Today is March 8, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

God's people are commended for their faith twice in Hebrews 11.

When Pharaoh threatened God's people with an army of chariots, God's people had to trust in God's victory as he told them to walk through the Red Sea. When God's people were told to conquer the imposing fortress of Jericho, God's people had to trust in God's victory as he told them to walk around the structure 13 times in the span of a week.

In both cases God's people had to walk in a direction that would have been challenging to go. And, in both cases, it was God who fought for his people; it was God who achieved the victory. Meaning, God's people had to trust in God's power, not in their own.

For us, God achieves victory over this world through Jesus Christ. However, that victory does not mean we won't face our own spiritual Pharaohs and Jericho's in our lives. God's victory means that the challenges we face in this world won't determine who we are in Christ or our future destiny that is secured by Christ.

All God asks us to do is to not give up, but to continue to move forward in faith trusting in his victory. That is what God's people did and what they were commended for.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on the faith of God's people and the victory we have in Jesus Christ, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
