Welcome to your mid-week!
One of the most striking things of Hebrews 11 discussion of faith is the 'why' we act in faith.
We do not act in faith with the expectation of receiving prosperity or success or to claim something for ourselves. The results of faith will vary dramatically and there is no guarantee that what we hope for will happen no matter our sincerity or maturity in the Lord.
As Hebrews 11:35 tells us, some will experience miracles for their faith, others will experience torture. Meaning, what we get out of faith should not be the reason to act in faith.
We act in faith because this is how we actively wait for the promises of God to be realized. This is how we do the good work God has created in advance for us to do. And by acting in faith we are justifying the faith of those who came before us, encouraging the faith of those around us, and are paving the way for the faith of those who will come after us.
This is why we act in faith. And this is how the past, present, and future become united by faith; how, as our author alludes to in Hebrews 11:40, we are made perfect in faith together.
