Welcome to your mid-week!
After the author of Hebrews spends all of chapter 11 - 40 verses - talking about what active faith looks like, he then concludes by giving us an analogy of what it means to act in faith. Acting in faith is like
running a race.
And, by using an analogy, our author is giving us our motivators to act in faith. We have a cloud of witnesses that should inspire, Jesus' example that we can follow after, and a prize that lasts forever.
What great motivators. You would think that, after that, our author would then end his lesson on faith with a cry of 'Let's go!' or 'Fighting!' But, no, that's not what he does. In a surprising move he ends with a word; a phrase not used anywhere else in the New Testament. He ends his lesson with this last challenge:
Consider Christ.
The word 'consider' in the original language connotes a process of serious thinking. A time where a matter is weighed with the utmost care through comparison, reflection, and conclusion.
The bible makes it clear that we are to examine ourselves and test ourselves to see whether we are really in the faith. Because, if we are in the faith, we will feel compelled to act in faith. But, living in this broken world with the temptation of our flesh is challenging, and acting in faith can sometimes be incredibly difficult.
And so, after all this talk about why we should act in faith, our author challenges us to pause and truly consider Christ so that we would not grow weary and lose heart in the race of faith God calls all of his children to run.
And I can't think of a better time to consider Christ then in Passion Week, which starts this Sunday.
God's blessing upon you as you consider Christ, mediate on what faith is, and the race we are called to run, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
