TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 25, 2023

The Faith of Noah

Today is January 25, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Noah's trust in God's rescue plan was so big...that he spent, at max, 100 years building the ark because that is what God told him to do.

Noah's trust in God's rescue plan was so big...that he lived in an ark full of animals with his immediate family for almost a year because that is what God told him to do.

Noah's trust in God's rescue plan was so big...that twice in the bible it tells us that Noah obeyed everything that the Lord commanded him.

And note, in the chapters about Noah and the flood, we don't see any second guessing by Noah. There are no 2 cents being given. No opinions or doubts or complaints or ideas being shared or questions being asked.

Noah did everything just as God commanded him. Noah did it all.

And that amazing obedience shows us the kind of trust Noah had in God's rescue plan. And, ultimately, that is the faith that God commended Noah for because Noah's faith is the faith that we will need when it comes to our salvation in Jesus Christ. And, just like Noah, we will have to make a choice.

Do I have holy fear, as Noah did, and trust in God's rescue plan completely? Or do I not? That's the choice we all must make. And, ultimately, Noah's choice to trust in God's rescue plan is the act of faith that we should pass forward.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the faith of Noah, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 18, 2023

The Faith of Enoch

Today is January 18, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Enoch is one of only two people in scripture who does not experience death. The reason he is given this reward is because

Enoch walked faithfully with God.

Now, compare his life to all the other great men and women of God in the bible. Enoch does not have one specific amazing moment of faith worth mentioning at all.

No huge leap of faith. No impossible task to do. No Goliaths to fight. No wars to win. No floods to face. No miracles to hope for. No legacy to pass on. No home to leave or culture to turn from or government to stand up against.

No specific moment worth mentioning at all. If Enoch had a eulogy it would not say anything of note except

Enoch walked faithfully with God.

And that, that is enough. Enoch's consistent faith - his life of faith - is what made him worthy to be on the list of those in the 'Hall of Faith' that is found in Hebrews 11. And, above everyone mentioned on that list, he and Elijah are the only ones not to experience death. That is how highly God viewed his act of faith.

And that is the point.

Enoch's faith might not have been flashy or dramatic; he might have not done anything worthy of note - but what he showed was a consistent faith his entire life. And a consistent faith is not only impactful, not only commended by God, but it is also how we pass our faith forward.

God's blessing as you meditate on the faith of Enoch, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Faith of Abel

Today is January 11, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

The story of the first martyr in the bible teaches us that faith should be done, not for what we get out of it, but simply out of our love for the Lord. Abel teaches us that our acts of faith should be sincere, something that should come out naturally in the comforts of our home.

For me, I think about how my parents sung hymns in the car, how my grandmother woke up in the early morning every day and prayed in her room, how I would see my dad read the bible in the living room, and how countless people just share the joy of the Lord without a care in the world.

Genuine acts of faith, practiced at home, not for the applause of others, but simply our of love for the Lord. That kind of faith does impact people.

That is what we learn from the example of Abel and, ultimately, that is how we pass our faith forward.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on the faith of Abel, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 4, 2023

Faith Forward

Today is January 4, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

In his explanation of how Jesus is greater than Judaism, the author of Hebrews shifts to the topic of 'the ancients'; Old Testament men and women and the faith they exhibited. He does this show how their acts of faith paved the way for us.

He argues that, yes, Jesus is important. Jesus is the one who perfects our faith. Jesus is the one we fix our eyes on. However, we should not disregard the many men and women in our past who paved the way for the faith that we have today, nor should we neglect to act in faith - especially that faith that has been passed to us.

In essence, he is telling us that our acts of faith are more important than we realize. That they will impact more people than you think. That they will out live us and effect beyond our own life time. That, put simply, our acts of faith will result in miracles being done.

And, from this idea, the author gives us a picture of us being in a relay race. That those before us have passed us this baton we call faith. So, what do we do with it? Do we fumble it? Drop it? Do we keep it to ourselves? And, in plain sight of the many who have already run the race so well and honorably? Is that what we do? OR do we take that faith forward? Do we pass that faith forward?

That’s the message of Hebrews. And that action – that is what our vision for this year is all about.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate upon your faith journey and all the people who brought you to where you are today, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 28, 2022

His One and Only Son

Today is December 28, 2022

Welcome to your mid-week!

Christmas is where we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And, yes, what happened on that day ultimately leads to the cross and the empty tomb. Meaning, in many ways, Christmas is a rescue story. God's one and only son is the gift given in love so that we can be saved.

However, by coming as a baby - by coming as flesh and dwelling with us - God was doing more than rescuing us. By meeting us where we were, God was showing us that his love comes from a place of understanding, compassion, and empathy. And, at the same time, by choosing to dwell with us, God was showing us that he prioritizes us.

In essence, what we traditionally do during holidays - visit friends and family members, is what God first showed us by his great act on Christmas.

And that act of 'being there for us' is something all of us should be doing more of for those around us.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on the birth of Jesus Christ and the coming of 'the Word' as flesh and dwelling among us, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
