The Joy of Our Salvation

Today is August 30, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Apostle Peter tell us in his 1st letter that the trials and challenges that we experience in this world have a purpose. Meaning, we should not just ignore them or pretend they do not effect us. What is their purpose? Well, to make

the joy of our salvation purer.

When we experience setbacks; when we experience frustrations; when we experience stress and anxiety and fear, hardship and challenges and trials, sickness and deterioration and death - all of that should make

the joy of our salvation purer.

And here's why:

All of the challenges of this world only shows more why God needed to save us.
All of the challenges of this world only shows more how incredible God's gift of salvation is.
All of the challenges of this world only give a clearer contrast to what our next life will be.

When this world pulls focus away from the truth of our joy that we have in Christ Jesus, sometimes we need to be like King David and pray that God would restore to us the joy of his salvation. For, that joy is truly an amazing joy. And, with it, we'll be able to have renewed strength to move forward.

God's blessing as you mediate on the joy of your salvation, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Jesus, the Healer

Today is August 23, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Last Sunday Pastor Diana preached on Jesus looking at the gospel of John, and she focused on Jesus as the healer.

With a world that is broken by sin, there will always be times of lament and hopelessness because we know that we were meant for better. That God shaped hole in our soul still yearns for that life that we had before the fall.

And so, crying out is the natural response. It is something we should not be ashamed of or fight against.

And the one we should cry out to is Jesus. As Pastor Diana said:

"We live in a world that is broken. We live in a world that is corrupt. And, during an indecent time, we look to Jesus as the ultimate healer who restores not just our spirits but also our bodies and unjust immoral laws and systems. We do not look to a temporary fix...we look to Eternal healing that only comes from Jesus."

God's blessing as you mediate on Jesus as the Healer, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Wrestling with God and Ambition

Today is August 9, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

King David's Psalm 131 is a plea for his people to humble themselves and draw near to the Lord in love and delight.

For King David, God is the only place where true contentment and peace are found. And, by comparing drawing near to God to a weaning child, David is teaching his people his choice:

That he will not let his drive for greatness steal his satisfaction in drawing near to God.
That he will not let his ambition be greater than his desire for the Lord.
That, as important as the work he does here on earth is, God will always be the greatest importance in his life.

And, by calling God's people 'Israel' in his final verse of Psalm 131, David is invoking the meaning of that name; challenging his people to wrestle with the plea he is given them.

And his plea to them is his plea to us.

The bible makes it clear that we should not have any selfish ambition but only an ambition to please the Lord. So, in many ways, Psalm 131 is a motivation check.

At the same time, Psalm 131 is a reminder that God just wants us. That it not about doing big and great things, but simply coming to him as a weaning child would his mother. To find our love and delight in him alone.
Is God your love and your delight? Are you pleasing Him or people?

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the plea of David and the example he gives, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Our Evil Acts

Today is August 2, 2023

Welcome to August and your mid-week!

When it comes to what an act of evil is, there are many opinions on what that actually is. People like to take into account context and situation and intention along with the actual act and who it effects. And, depending on one's own experience and philosophy, the definition of what an evil act is may vary dramatically.

However, biblically, one of the greatest acts of evil is very clearly defined.

In the story of King Ahab - the King of Israel who the bible tells us did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any other king before him - the evil act that is mentioned over and over again is

idolatry.

In fact, not only did King Ahab worship physical idols and made idolatry an institution, King Ahab eventually made himself into an idol, prioritizing his will over the commands of God.

It was in this act where we see God finally bring judgment on him and his dynasty.

And, since everything that he did - from jealousy and coveting, to murder and apathy - stemmed from the evil act of idolatry; everything he did was considered an evil act. Whatever act that came from idolatry was considered an evil act.

And that is our definition of what an evil act is.

And, as difficult as it is to accept this definition (admitting and confessing to all the evil acts we do and all the ways we idolize everything over God). Experiencing the weight of that guilt (even if it is ever so briefly) is incredibly important because then we can appreciate more profoundly the love of God.

How despite the evil we do, we are forgiven in Christ Jesus.

The more we know of our guilt – of our evil acts toward God that we do every day - the greater that forgiveness is. And from there our thanksgiving becomes sincere, our worship becomes pure, and our acts of goodness become more aligned to He who is truly good.

And doing good works is ultimately what God wants us to do. But, we cannot get there unless we see all of our evil acts...

God's blessing as you mediate on good and evil and the biblical definition of it, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 26, 2023

The Fruit of Fellowship

Today is July 26, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the fruits of fellowship is courage.

Courage to face persecution.
Courage to face economic hardships.
Courage to face sickness.
Courage to face death.

The fears of this world are a little easier to face when you have people by your side.

However, when you look in the bible, you will see that finding support and security was not the end all be all for those that had fellowship with one another. From the example of the early church we see that fellowship always led to the courage to share the gospel.

In fact, when faced with threats against their physical well-being, God's people did not pray for deliverance or rescue but, instead, prayed for more courage to speak the gospel to people. It was like fellowship was the spiritual charging stations of those that were being sent out.

Meaning, true fellowship does not end at courage. Ultimately the fruit of true fellowship is evangelism.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on fellowship and your own fears of sharing the gospel, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
