Wrestling with God and Ambition
Today is August 9, 2023
Welcome to your mid-week!
King David's Psalm 131 is a plea for his people to humble themselves and draw near to the Lord in love and delight.
For King David, God is the only place where true contentment and peace are found. And, by comparing drawing near to God to a weaning child, David is teaching his people his choice:
That he will not let his drive for greatness steal his satisfaction in drawing near to God.
That he will not let his ambition be greater than his desire for the Lord.
That, as important as the work he does here on earth is, God will always be the greatest importance in his life.
And, by calling God's people 'Israel' in his final verse of Psalm 131, David is invoking the meaning of that name; challenging his people to wrestle with the plea he is given them.
And his plea to them is his plea to us.
The bible makes it clear that we should not have any selfish ambition but only an ambition to please the Lord. So, in many ways, Psalm 131 is a motivation check.
At the same time, Psalm 131 is a reminder that God just wants us. That it not about doing big and great things, but simply coming to him as a weaning child would his mother. To find our love and delight in him alone.

Is God your love and your delight? Are you pleasing Him or people?
God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the plea of David and the example he gives, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
