TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 15, 2023

The Stream of Thanksgiving

Today is November 15, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

There are many things that we take for granted that we just assume will always be there. But, as we become painfully aware of in time, nothing about this life will always be. Because of sin this life is finite, fragile, and fleeting. And so, what should the Christian we do with this life? Well...

Some say embrace 'carpe diem.' Some say we need to 'stop and smell the roses' more. You know what the bible tells us to do?

Fear God, keep his commandments, and do good to all people.

And the reason it tells us this is because, while this life will not last forever, there are some things that do. And those things should effect how we live this life. A couple of the big ones?

God's love and God's faithfulness.

Throughout the bible it tells us how God's love endures forever and how God's word endures forever. And both of those aspects of God point to how amazing God’s enduring invitation for us is. How by faith alone - by putting our trust in Jesus - can we be saved.

When we accept that invitation, then can we truly begin to see what this life is compared to eternity in Christ. And, from understanding the joy of heaven, of the resurrection, and being united with our maker, that should naturally lead us to

fear God, keep his commandments, and do good to all people.

At the minimum, it should lead to thanksgiving.

God's blessing upon you as you think about how we take God for granted, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 8, 2023

The Fount of Thanksgiving

Today is November 8, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Knowing God's mercy is where true thanksgiving flows from. However, fully embracing God's mercy can be hard.

I mean, to admit that we are all sinners. To see the just judgment for our sin is death. To see how God shows us mercy by not giving us the judgement we deserve instantly but to delay it.

To fully embrace God's mercy can be hard.

But, when we do; when we see how God's mercy extends from throughout history to this point now,

just so that we might have the opportunity to know his love;
just so that we might have the opportunity to know that we do not have to face judgment for our sins;
just so that we might have the opportunity to know that there is someone who - like Moses - is pleasing to God and mediates on our behalf, paving the way to our salvation
just so that we might have the opportunity to know Jesus

THEN, suddenly you understand why the bible tells us to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18), why every good and perfect thing is from God (James 1:17), and why Apostle Paul describes God as someone who is rich in mercy (Ephesians 2:4).

Only by knowing God's mercy can we truly give thanks to the Lord for God's mercy is the fount of thanksgiving.

God's blessing upon you as mediate on God's mercy, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Way of God

Today is November 1, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday I was on vacation and Pastor Daniel 'Woogie' Kim preached again on my behalf. And, in his message, he talked about God's creation in Genesis and how, not only does it show his great love for us, but also shows our job:

to take care of his creation in love.

And the reason that job is important is because that is what it means to be an image bearer of God. As he said in his concluding statement:

"Our job is not to pick and choose the situations we want to be in. Our job is to be faithful. Our job is to keep on loving, keep on serving, and being the witness that God calls us to be. That, in our situations, that we are the witness of Jesus Christ; the witness of the cross. That when we love and when we serve, then that's the measure in which God transforms our families, our churches, our work places. Because that is the way of God and that is the reason we have this image."

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on what it means to be made in God's image, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 18, 2023

Showing God

Today is October 18, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Apostle John makes it clear that the act that we are to show to the world that shows we are Christian as well as who God truly is, is

to love. to love sacrificially.

Now, we all know that that love is best shown via Jesus on the cross. However, God shows his sacrificial love all throughout the Old Testament as well. The most challenging example of it apart from Jesus? His love taught through the prophet Hosea.

In the book of Hosea we see that God's people were unfaithful, rebellious, deceitful, devious, doubtful, disrespectful, selfish, and shallow. And yet, despite all of that that God chose

to love. to love sacrificially.

And this was not an easy act. This was something he wrestled within himself to do. But, ultimately, he chose to do it. It was his love that covered over their sins so that he could have relationship with his people; it was God's choice to sacrifice his pride in order to have a relationship.

And, when we show that kind of love, not only do we show that God lives in us, but his love is made complete in us aka we show God to the world.

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on God's sacrificial love and the importance of showing that outward, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 11, 2023

To Be Satisfied and Refreshed

Today is October 11, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Jesus said that he will give rest to the weary and the burdened (Matthew 11:28), what he was saying was that in him was the way back home.

God had given a similar message of rest to his people during the time of the exile. And, in that message found in Jeremiah 29-31, God invoked the time of the wilderness in Exodus.

Meaning, Jesus was invoking both the idea of the exile and the wilderness when he tells us to come to him if we want to find rest. And, by doing so, Jesus is having us to think about our present troubles from a different perspective.

I mean, both the exile and the wandering of the wilderness were caused by sin. And the negative experiences of both are the results of not being home. Yes, at the time, God's people might have wanted more food or a softer bed or things to go as they expected, however in those terrible situations, the cure for it all was just to be able to go home.

And that is Jesus' point.

Because of sin we are now in our own spiritual exile and our own spiritual wilderness. Everything that ails us is because of that spiritual reason. Now, we can do our best to assimilate to this life and make it as comfortable as we can. However, we can never find true rest and true peace here because this is not our home, and it never was supposed to be.

Our home is with the Lord, and Jesus paves the way back home by addressing the core issue for our spiritual exile and spiritual wilderness: sin.

Meaning, while coming to Jesus may not give us the temporary relief we seek, his act of love on the cross promises that whatever ails us today will be temporary. That, just as the tomb is empty, so there is hope for our future.

And that is why coming to Jesus can give us rest. That is where we can be satisfied and refreshed.

God's blessing as you meditate on coming to Jesus, our spiritual home, and the rest that is being offered, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
