TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 20, 2023

Jesus, the Messiah

Today is December 20, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

The probability of Jesus fulfilling 48 prophecies about the Messiah in the Old Testament is ~10^157. With the amount of atoms in the known universe being estimated at ~10^80, Jesus fulfilling 48 prophecies is a statistical miracle.

Add that to the fact that Jesus fulfills not just 48 prophecies but over 300 prophecies, and you see just how much evidence there is that Jesus is the Messiah.

However, despite all the evidence, not only did 1st century Jews not believe Jesus was the Messiah. They called for him to be crucified.

For them, the Messiah was supposed to violently cast out all foreign nations from Israel, cause all nations to serve under the yoke of the Messiah, and remove all foreigners and unrighteous Israelites from the nation.

For them, they did not accept Isaiah 53 as a prophecy of the Messiah; a chapter that talks about the Messiah dying for the sins of all.

For them, they did not accept Daniel 9 as a prophecy of the Messiah, a chapter that talks about how the Messiah would be killed before the destruction of the temple.

For them, they did not accept Zechariah 11 as a prophecy of the Messiah, a chapter talking about how the Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver.

No.

They picked and chose the prophecies that best fit their expectation of what they wanted the Messiah to be for them. And, when Jesus did not meet those expectations, they said that he was not the Messiah and they called for him to be crucified.

And understanding why they did in the face of so much evidence, is a great lesson for us on what not to do.

God's blessing as you mediate on Jesus, the Messiah, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 13, 2023

Jesus, the Savior

Today is December 13, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

When we say that 'Jesus Saves' sometimes people think that he is saving us from this world; or he's saving us from our financial hardships; or that he's saving us from our bad relationships.

No. That's not it. The bible makes it clear that Jesus is saving us from

the wrath of God.

And the wrath of God is a universal problem that all of us face as evident by the fact that all of us die. And so, Jesus is saving us from death; from sin; from

the wrath of God.

However, the difference between Jesus saving us versus, say, a firefighter saving us, is that Jesus is not just saving us from something. He is saving us for something.

Jesus is saving us for relationship. Jesus is saving us to be reconciled back to God.

I there lies the sticking point. Many would embrace Jesus the savior of God's wrath but do not want Jesus the savior of my relationship with God. Many want God to save them from death but not tell them what to do with their time or energy or money, or tell them who we are supposed to love.

Many want God to just save them from his wrath and then leave them alone.

But that is not what Jesus does. And we cannot pick and choose here. To be a Christian is to embrace all of what 'Jesus the Savior' does. And that is the gospel message we need to be sharing to others.

As Apostle Paul writes eloquently in 2 Corinthians 5:20b "We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God."

God's blessing as you mediate on Jesus 'the Savior' and your relationship with God, and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 6, 2023

Jesus, the Baby

Today is December 6, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus came as a baby to empathize with our weaknesses. He came so that we would know that he knows what living in this world is like. We do not pray to and worship some distant, unrecognizable, unrelatable deity. No. We pray to and worship someone who experienced

cold
sleeplessness
insecurity
vulnerability
restlessness
discomfort
anxiety
& pain

Someone who experienced

hunger
thirst
weariness
sadness
poverty
& rejection

Someone who experienced being

misunderstood
unsupported
denied
betrayed
abandoned
falsely accused
& afflicted

Someone who experienced being

despised
unwelcomed
& who suffered at the hands of man

Someone who experienced

a death of a friend
a death of a cousin who was like a spiritual brother
a death of a parent
& his own unjust death

Jesus experienced of all that to empathize with us. And it is that empathy that led to his act of choosing to die for us on the cross. It is as if Jesus had so much empathy for us that he said, I never want my people to experience any of that ever again.

And it is that heart that we should think of every time we see the baby Jesus. It is the heart of empathy in action that should challenge our own heart to act just as empathetically toward others this season.

God's blessing as you mediate on the baby Jesus and active empathy, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Psalms, Hymns, and Songs from the Spirit

Today is November 29, 2023

I love music.

For me, nothing moves me more than music. It has a way of capturing moments in time, of past events and emotions. It can break down barriers, rally people to a cause, and unite people in ways so beautifully.

Music is powerful. This is why God tells us to speak in psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit to one another. I mean,

What better way to know and retain God's wisdom than music?
What better way to know and retain God's instruction than music?
What better way to know and retain God's encouragement than music?

Our memory is connected to emotions, and music has a powerful ability to evoke emotions.

Now, obviously, some discernment needs to be done here. Some studying and research in the bible needs to be done here. I mean, we can't go around singing heresy to people or belt out false promises in the shower.

However, when you know what you sing is biblical truth? Then, not only is it powerful in your life but it is powerful to those who hear it from you.

And that is why Apostle Paul tells us to

"teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts."

God's blessing upon you as you meditate on psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 22, 2023

A Cup of Thanksgiving

Today is November 22, 2023

Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to your mid-week!

God's amazing gift of salvation is something all of us should be thankful. It is a gift given freely. Biblically speaking it is a gift given

despite having no relationship
despite having no shared blood
despite it being underserved
despite culturally being hated
despite socially being hated
despite societally being hated
despite being an enemy

This is how freely given God's gift is.

And what is the gift again? Salvation. Life. Eternal life. It is the gift of heaven. The gift of the resurrection. The gift of being with our maker again. The gift of never having to experience fear or pain or sickness or death.

The more you realize how amazing salvation is and how underserving we are to receive it, the more you can understand why Apostle Paul calls God's gift

indescribable.

Of course giving thanks is what we should do. But we should do more.

God's gift of salvation was not given for us to be timid but, as Apostle Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:7, it was given so we can be courageous, loving, and holy. Meditating and thinking about God's gift of salvation should stir something in us to not fall into laziness.

And so, this season, as we think about all the amazing things we should be thankful for, let us remember God's amazing gift of salvation and let us allow the Spirit of God to stir within us so that we may do what he calls us to do.
