The Faith of John

Today is January 24, 2024

Jesus’ first impression of Apostle John was to give him the title a ‘son of thunder.’ Clearly, Apostle John was loud, impulsive, and quick to anger.

However, the reason Apostle John in Acts 4 is able to stand silently and bravely amidst unjust accusations and be able to wisely and tactfully answer commands thrown at him, is because Apostle John had matured immensely since meeting Jesus.

That changed did not come spontaneously. It must have been taught and exemplified before him. Meaning, Apostle John had a teachable faith. No wonder he is known as the disciple whom Jesus loved. I mean, what teacher does not love a good student?

I think as Christians we all know that we need to be reading and studying the word of God. The bible tells us that all scripture is life. It guides us, protects, and is the only weapon against the enemy.

However, with almost 1200 chapters, spread across 66 books, spanning over a millennia of history, written in three different languages - studying the bible can be daunting.

The beauty of Apostle John’s faith is that we see the fruit of having a teachable faith. We see the results of trying to know as much as Jesus as possible. And that fruit shown in Acts 4, I believe, is something we all desire.

God’s blessing as you mediate on the faith of Apostle John, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 17, 2024

The Faith of Peter

Today is January 17, 2024

Peter was able to stand up and share his faith despite the entire audience knowing his failures and mistakes because he had experienced the forgiveness of God.

Forgiveness is knowing that our actions do not effect the outcome; like running a race knowing the prize is already won. Peter knew his eternity was secure, this is why he was able to stand up and share his faith.

Forgiveness should make our faith bold and free.

The problem is that we do not fully accept the forgiveness of God; believing our failures and actions affect how God views us. When we believe that, that stifles our faith.

When we say we can’t do something for God because we are not mature enough or spiritual enough, what we are really saying is that we do not think we are forgiven enough.

The bible makes it clear that forgiveness is not earned or paid for, it is only received through the grace and mercy of God.

This is why Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us to throw off the sin that so easily entangles and fix our eyes on Jesus. Our sin has been forgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ and it should not be used as an excuse not to be bold with our faith.

God’s blessing as you mediate on forgiveness in light of your mistakes and failures, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Faith Forward: A Story of Resonating Faith

Today is January 10, 2024

Before we can resonate our faith outward we must first ask ourselves whether this faith resonates with us at all.

Does God’s patience resonate at all?

Does God’s mercy to not punish us for the sin that we commit, resonate at all?

Does God’s love to send Jesus - he who has no sin; who is innocent - to pay the penalty of our sin in our place, resonate at all?

Does the broken body and blood spilt of Jesus resonate at all?

And what about heaven?

Does being a child of God and heirs to the kingdom of heaven, resonate at all?

And when I say heaven, I mean the place that will never perish, spoil, and fade; the place of the ‘no mores’ - no more death, no more mourning, no more crying, no more pain; the place where our bodies will be resurrected in glory, in power, and in spirit, does that resonate with you at all?

If not that then what about the resonance of other people’s faith?

Does the faith of Christians throughout history resonate at all?

Does the faith of pastors or evangelists or missionaries or teachers, resonate at all?

Does the faith of authors or actors, singers or soldiers? Testimonies from countless people from all backgrounds and professions and peoples and cultures, does that resonate at all?

Does the faith of Christian love ones resonate at all?

For, once this faith resonates with us - once we choose this faith as our faith - then we can talk about how we can resonate this faith outward. But, before that, we have to ask whether we truly have the faith that is the first verse of our vision verse:

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see

God’s blessing as you think about your faith and whether it is your faith, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

A New Year Resolution

Today is January 3, 2024

Welcome to 2024 and your mid-week!

Moses' only psalm in the book of Psalm - Psalm 90 - teaches us to look at the suffering and sorrow and death of this life as symptoms of the disease known as sin. And, as constant as those symptoms may be in this life, Moses' psalm reminds us that there are other constants as well. Namely

God's mercy and his faithfulness to be our refuge.

For Moses, he had witnessed first hand how God had transformed weeping to rejoicing, sorrow to joy, and weakness to something that is worthy.

Therefore, in the midst of the constant hardships we experience in this world, Moses' prayer is that we run toward God; that only a life for him will last; that the wise life stays in time with the eternal God.

And, ultimately, that is the New Year resolution that I hope all of us would have.

God's blessing as you mediate on mortality, God's mercy, and the New Year, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Jesus, the Lord

Today is December 27, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

In the bible, Jesus declares himself to be God. If anyone else did this, we would say that they are crazy and untrustworthy; that all of their words and actions - no matter how good they are - are dangerous because they are done to manipulate, coerce, and to fool.

And so, is Jesus God? Is Jesus telling the truth or should he be dismissed as a lunatic and cast aside?

This is the question that Christmas poses to us; a question of whether or not we believe the titles that the Angels told the shepherds the night Jesus was born.

Is Jesus really the savior, the messiah, and the Lord?

For the Magi, they had that same question posed to them through the Messianic prophecy of the Old Testament. A question that would have been posed by the writings of one of the Chief Administrators in their culture's history - Daniel. A question whose answer would be found through study and research and calculations of not just Daniel's writings but of the writings of the Prophet Balaam and the Old Testament as a whole.

And what answer did the Magi come to?

They believed Jesus to be the Lord. And they showed their belief by traveling the ~2 year journey to meet Jesus, bowing down and worshipping him and presenting him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Magi had sought the truth with all their heart and, in doing so, found Jesus, the Lord.

God's blessing upon you this Christmas season, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
