TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 17, 2024

The Faith of Timothy

Today is April 17, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

Timothy saying ‘yes’ to go on missions with Apostle Paul is the start of a beautiful friendship that will not only go to impact that area for Christ, but lay the foundation for all churches up to the present day.

However, in order to go on that mission trip, Timothy needed to be circumcised. Timothy needed to deny himself for the good of others. This act of ‘self-denial’ is an act of faith.

Jesus tells his disciples to deny themselves and follow him. Apostle Paul teaches how self-denial helps us to know Christ more. Clearly self-denial is for our benefit spiritually. This is why we practice spiritual disciplines and why we strive to put to death our earthly nature.

However, Timothy teaches us that self-denial is also a way to love someone.

That, when we look to the good of someone else over our own self interests, that that is an act of love that can bridge gaps and reach people for Christ.

And, while Timothy’s example is the extreme, there are many ways to practice this kind of faith.

Giving to the poor is a form of self-denial.

Living modestly rather than indulging in excessive luxury is form of self-denial.

Adopting a different culture than your own is a form of self-denial.

In fact, all of us practice this kind of faith every time we attend a Korean American Immigrant Church.

God’s blessing upon you as you meditate on self denial and on loving people different than you, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - APRIL 10, 2024

The Faith of the Church of Jerusalem

Today is April 10, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

In the face of differing opinions the Church of Jerusalem showed us that we need handle such differences with discussion, respect, and submission to the word of the Lord.

But the challenging act of faith that they showed was a call for charity.

Not everyone is able to see both sides of an issue nor empathize with the opposition. Not everyone is able to throw away their culture, history, and tradition and hold firmly to the truth of God.

Those who are unable to do so are said, by Apostle Paul, to have a ‘weak conscious.’ However, instead of belittling such weakness, Apostle Paul says that that is our opportunity to show charity.

That, just as Christ emulated for us, to prioritize loving the other person over winning an argument; to prioritize loving the other person over oneself; to be willing to lose so that they may see the love of God.

That is the faith that the Church of Jerusalem showed - especially those who were Gentile Christians in the church. A faith that has been simplified to this saying:

“In Essentials Unity, In Non-Essentials Liberty, In All Things Charity”

God’s blessing as you mediate on the different people in your life and the word charity, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday

Baptism: Practicing Resurrection

Today is April 3, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday we had our Easter Joint Worship and our head pastor, Ko MSN, preached on Baptism and the importance of living a life that is reborn.

And the beauty of the worship service was that he highlighted his message by inviting those who were being baptized and confirmed to give their testimonies. Six of the seven testimonies were from members of EM. And every testimony was different and powerful.

It was a great reminder that God is working in the lives of people; a great reminder of why we should be living a reborn life for Christ.

God’s blessing upon you as you think about Easter and what it means for your faith, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 27, 2024

Trust Sunday

Today is March 27, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

Richard Fagerlin once said, “Trust isn’t what we do; it is what results from what we do.”

Part of Passion Week is remembering what God did for mankind. It is about remembering the promises of God and remembering how God fulfilled those promises.

For the disciples during Passion Week, they had a skewed understanding of the promises of God. And, when what they expected did not happen, they lost faith in Jesus and abandoned him.

Much of the emotional rollercoaster they went through is because they really didn’t know Jesus and what he was sent by God to do. There is a phrase that captures what happened to them:

Know Jesus, Know Peace. No Jesus, No Peace.

When you are able to know why Jesus came to earth - when we are able to see the larger picture and purpose of the work of God - then trust of God will naturally come. And the beauty of the work of God is that it does not end on the cross. God is still at work today. Every testimony given and answered prayer shared and fruit of the Spirit shown is evidence of his work.

And the more we remember his works in the past and see his works in the present, the more we can trust in his promises for our future. That is why we celebrate Passion Week.

God’s blessing upon you this Passion Week as you meditate on the works of God, and I look forward to worshipping with you in the Main Sanctuary for Joint Worship this Easter Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MARCH 20, 2024

The Faith of Paul and Barnabas

Today is March 20, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

When talking about the topic of discipline, Mike Tyson once said: “Discipline is doing what you hate to do, but doing it like you love it.”

The difference between that discipline and our spiritual discipline is that our spiritual discipline is not about getting what we want or trying to achieve what we desire. It is about getting what God wants. It is about achieving what God desires for us.

For Apostle Paul and Barnabas, they did not go out on the first missionary journey of the early church expecting success. Nor did they expect to be persecuted, threatened, and attacked, which they were.

The only clear conviction was that they needed to go. And that conviction came from

worship and fasting and prayer and confirmation

Once they knew what God wanted them to do, it was all about them saying ‘yes’ and being disciplined in doing God’s conviction for them, no matter the results.

That is the faith we see Paul and Barnabas do. And that is the faith that resonates.

God’s blessing as you seek God’s conviction in your life and meditate on what it means to be disciplined in your faith, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
