God's Steadfast Love

Today is April 18, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week.

My father-in-law, Kibok Hahn, passed away Monday, April 9th in Korea. My wife and I had to go to Korea immediately so, this past Sunday, a guest speaker - Pastor David SukHoa Lee - preached. He preached on Psalm 13 and on 'God's Steadfast Love.'

For me, that scripture reminds me of the song by Brian Doerksen based on the same passage. In the song he shifts between minor and major keys reflecting the torment of the Psalmist in both demanding answers for his suffering and yet submitting to trust in the Lord.

Here's a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uusiWwIo-C4

In the mist of our trials and tribulations, sorrow and pain, let us remember the unfailing love and salvation of our Lord. God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Christ is Risen!

Today is April 4, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday we had a joint worship with the entire church to celebrate the Risen Lord! There was a joint praise team made up of EM, KM, Youth, and Children's ministry members; our Youth Pastor - Pastor Diana - preached in English to the children; Ko MSN preached to all of us with his sermon translated and projected on the screen in English; and 2 of our EM member's children were baptized.

It was a full day of celebration but, more importantly, it was a good reminder of the power of the resurrection and the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

May this hope give you joy and peace in whatever situation you find yourself in this week.

God bless you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Hosanna!

Today is March 28, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

For the people of God during the Roman Empire, they were the underdogs. A million to one shot that they would ever conquer the military might of Rome and return to prominence as they once were back in the time of King David and Solomon.

And yet, with all the prophetic words of a future 'Messiah,' there was still hope. A million to one shot, yes, but still there was hope.

And that's when Jesus entered the scene.

Suddenly a million to one shot became more certain as Jesus started fulfilling prophecy after prophecy until, after the resurrection of Lazarus, he fulfilled the biggest prophecy of all.

Zechariah 9:9 - "Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

With Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey, all of God's people believed that they had victory at hand. They cried out 'Hosanna' and 'King' despite being under the rule of Rome. They fearlessly and joyfully praised Jesus believing that their underdog status was at an end and that Jesus had come to save them.

They were the underdog that won! Or, so they thought.

Later in the week, when Jesus didn't overthrow the Roman Empire but got arrested without a fight, all of that excitement and expectation turned to shouts of condemnation. 'Crucify Him!' they would shout. How dare Jesus give us that kind of hope - fulfill all those prophesies - and yet fail to deliver on being the savior and king to God's people.

However, Jesus did not come to save them. He had come to save us all. Jesus did not come to conquer the Roman Empire. He had come to conquer death. And, on Easter, all would see and know and, to this day, millions if not billions still fearlessly and joyfully praise His name.

And that is what we are suppose to do. From our minds to our eyes; from our smell to what we hear; it all needs to end with worship and praise to our King.

God's blessing upon you this Holy Week, and I look forward to seeing you all in the Main Sanctuary this Easter Sunday.

Hearing the Voice of the Lord

Today is March 21 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Elijah was in a desperate situation he went to mount Horeb; to the mountain of God. There, the word of the Lord came to him, he responded, and then he waited for the presence of the Lord to pass by.

Elijah placed himself in a situation where he would not be distracted, focused on God's word, prayed, and then was still before the Lord so that he could recognize the Spirit and discern God's voice.

And that is what we need to do.

I think often, when we try to hear God's voice, it's challenging to discern his voice over the sea of other voices competing for our attention. Is this God's voice or my own? Is this Satan? Is this the world? Is this my culture or my country or my family's voice?

In these circumstances we need to turn to the word of God for guidance (Psalm 119:105), pray for wisdom (James 1:5), and depend on the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27).

And the more familiar we are with scripture and the more comfortable we are with prayer the more we will be able to recognize the work of the spirit and hear the voice of the Lord.

Galatians 5:16 reminds us that the Holy Spirit will not convict us to do anything that will gratify the desires of our flesh.

1 Peter 1:2 reminds us that the Holy Spirit leads us to sanctification...not necessarily success or comfort or victory.

God may tell us no, like he did Paul for his 'thorn' and Jesus for his 'cup', but, what is certain, is that when we hear the voice of the Lord and listen to his instruction, we will experience the fruit of the spirit; the fruit of peace and joy.

So, let us follow Elijah's example. Let come back to God, read his word, respond in prayer, recognize the Spirit, and hear the voice of the Lord. God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Be God's Aroma

Today is March 14, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday we continued our discussion on 'holiness' and we began with a spoken word by Brandon Chai, one of our members.

A link to a recording of his poem can be found here.
A link to the words of his poem can be found here.

And, in the discussion of holiness, we focused on our nose - on smelling. In 2 Corinthians 2:15 Paul tells us that we are the 'aroma of Christ.'

An aroma is a scent; something invisible and yet carries with it memories.

And that was the challenge Paul was giving us. To be invisible and, at the same time, have people remember who God is. This meant that our actions and words and deeds are suppose to be the aroma of what reminds people of God.

What makes this difficult is that, sometimes, we stink. Or, worse, we are that aroma but we don't give the credit to where its due. We don't talk about God and people don't know we are Christian. Or, sometimes, we don't have any odor at all. We hide it away. Maybe out of shame or fear of judgement or rejection even though we have claimed Christ as our Lord and have experienced his life changing love.

This is not what we are suppose to do

We are suppose to be the aroma of Christ. We are suppose to fill the air with Jesus' love and righteousness and goodness so much that the world will know and come to worship the source of where that aroma comes from.

That is what we are suppose to do. That is what we are suppose to be.

So then, God's blessing upon you as you try your best to be God's aroma and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
