Sabbath Rest
Today is April 25, 2018
Welcome to your mid-week.
When we think of the word 'sabbath' we usually think of a day; we usually think of the 4th commandment. And often we think of it as something we are suppose to do. We are suppose to have a 'sabbath' to worship God and to remember God and to do something for God and, for some of us, it is a burden.
We would rather spend that time making more money or doing more errands or enjoying more of this life.
But, since it is a command, we do it. Whether out of duty or out of our cultural/family expectation or guilt, we do it.
But that is not the 'sabbath.'
As Jesus teaches us in Mark 2:27 - “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
The Sabbath was made for our benefit; not for our burden.
In Mark 4:35, Jesus and his disciples are out on the sea when a storm comes. And, for a moment, we see the disciples in stress and anxiety and we see Jesus at rest. When Jesus calms the storm he asks them - “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Here we see the beauty and benefit of the 'Sabbath.'
When we choose to have our 'sabbath' - when we stop and trust in the Lord - we are reminded that this is not our world. That this broken and sinful and fallen world is not our home. The Sabbath is a reminder of where we put our trust and where our hope lies. This way, when the storms come - and they will come - you can still find rest.
And, what's more, Jesus tells us in Matthew 12:8 that he is 'Lord of the Sabbath.' Meaning that, as Christians who have declared Jesus Lord over our lives, we can find this rest any time; any place; any day.
So then, let us take advantage of what God has given us and have our 'Sabbath rest.' God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
