Hearing the Voice of the Lord

Today is March 21 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Elijah was in a desperate situation he went to mount Horeb; to the mountain of God. There, the word of the Lord came to him, he responded, and then he waited for the presence of the Lord to pass by.

Elijah placed himself in a situation where he would not be distracted, focused on God's word, prayed, and then was still before the Lord so that he could recognize the Spirit and discern God's voice.

And that is what we need to do.

I think often, when we try to hear God's voice, it's challenging to discern his voice over the sea of other voices competing for our attention. Is this God's voice or my own? Is this Satan? Is this the world? Is this my culture or my country or my family's voice?

In these circumstances we need to turn to the word of God for guidance (Psalm 119:105), pray for wisdom (James 1:5), and depend on the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27).

And the more familiar we are with scripture and the more comfortable we are with prayer the more we will be able to recognize the work of the spirit and hear the voice of the Lord.

Galatians 5:16 reminds us that the Holy Spirit will not convict us to do anything that will gratify the desires of our flesh.

1 Peter 1:2 reminds us that the Holy Spirit leads us to sanctification...not necessarily success or comfort or victory.

God may tell us no, like he did Paul for his 'thorn' and Jesus for his 'cup', but, what is certain, is that when we hear the voice of the Lord and listen to his instruction, we will experience the fruit of the spirit; the fruit of peace and joy.

So, let us follow Elijah's example. Let come back to God, read his word, respond in prayer, recognize the Spirit, and hear the voice of the Lord. God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Be God's Aroma

Today is March 14, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday we continued our discussion on 'holiness' and we began with a spoken word by Brandon Chai, one of our members.

A link to a recording of his poem can be found here.
A link to the words of his poem can be found here.

And, in the discussion of holiness, we focused on our nose - on smelling. In 2 Corinthians 2:15 Paul tells us that we are the 'aroma of Christ.'

An aroma is a scent; something invisible and yet carries with it memories.

And that was the challenge Paul was giving us. To be invisible and, at the same time, have people remember who God is. This meant that our actions and words and deeds are suppose to be the aroma of what reminds people of God.

What makes this difficult is that, sometimes, we stink. Or, worse, we are that aroma but we don't give the credit to where its due. We don't talk about God and people don't know we are Christian. Or, sometimes, we don't have any odor at all. We hide it away. Maybe out of shame or fear of judgement or rejection even though we have claimed Christ as our Lord and have experienced his life changing love.

This is not what we are suppose to do

We are suppose to be the aroma of Christ. We are suppose to fill the air with Jesus' love and righteousness and goodness so much that the world will know and come to worship the source of where that aroma comes from.

That is what we are suppose to do. That is what we are suppose to be.

So then, God's blessing upon you as you try your best to be God's aroma and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Fixing our Eyes

Today is March 7, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

In 1 John 2, Apostle John warns the church of loving the world. He warns that "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life" is not from the Father but from the world and, just like the world, it does not bring everlasting satisfaction but will pass away.

From this passage we were challenged to think about what we see and the dangers they hold. What is the 'lust of the eyes?' And we talked about pornography and coveting because often the eyes are the means by which sinful desires are introduced into our mind. Why? Because when things captivate our attention we often fail to inquire about their real value or harm.

For David, Bathsheba was so "very beautiful' that he did not care if she was married.

For Eve, the forbidden fruit was so 'pleasing to eye' that she did not care if it brought her death.

Yet this can be overcome. Through the example of Jesus we saw the need to be on guard and ready with scripture. How, when tempted with 'the kingdoms of the world and their splendor' Jesus was able to not be captivated and fight back against the visual temptation.

And that was our challenge. To fix our eyes on Christ, be on guard, and see the true value of the things this world throws at us. God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Christ Foundation?

Today is March 1, 2018

Welcome to March and your mid-week!

In the face terrible situations Apostle Paul was still able to see the good.

In Philippians 1:15-18 Paul had people who would be considered Brothers in Christ, lying and gossiping about him. And yet, when faced with personal attacks, Paul was still able to find the joy.

In Philippians 4:11 Paul was in jail, hungry, and potentially facing death. And yet, when faced with this situation, Paul was able to be content.

In 2 Corinthians 12:7b-9 Paul was asking God to take away 'a thorn' from his life. And yet, when God says no, we see that Paul is able to find rest in the Lord.

Paul does not show resentment, nor does he fall into self-pity, nor does he blame God for his situation. Paul is able to see the other side of his situation and find joy, contentment, and rest. How? Because

Jesus Christ is his foundation.

If his foundation had been his social life, then being gossiped about and lied about would have been devastating. If his foundation was his home, then his imprisonment would have been catastrophic. If his foundation was himself, then his thorn would have been unbearable.

And yet, because Paul's foundation was Jesus Christ - the unchanging, everlasting, rock and redeemer of his soul - Paul was able to to change his perspective, renew his mind, as it says in Romans 12:2, to see the will of God, and see the good.

And that is our challenge.

God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Motivation to Pursue

Today is February 21 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

The word 'pursue' is an active, intentional word that invokes urgency and importance. It is the word that is connected with our vision for 2018 - 'A Community that Pursues Holiness.' Our vision isn't a community 'stumbling' or 'moping' or 'being dragged' to holiness. No. Our vision is that we will 'pursue' holiness.

Now, how can we get the motivation to do that?

Well, in Philippians 1:22-28, we see Paul's motivation. It comes from his experience with Christ and from the need of those he saw around him.

For Paul, relationship with Christ was so good that he had to share it. In writing to the church of Philipi, Paul was in jail and was not sure if he would live or die. And yet he was courageous and confident and joyful because of Christ Jesus. In Christ he was experiencing peace through that storm, contentment in the face of opposition, and joy in the mist of hopelessness.

At the same time, Paul also saw the need of those in the community of God and he knew that his experience could directly help. For the sake of their joy and faith Paul wanted to be with the community of God. And that is where our motivation should come from.

To be holy is to obey the commands of God; to be set apart and to love Him and others. For Paul, Christ's love and the needs he saw in others was so overwhelming that he wanted to be holy. It was what motivated him and what should motivate us as a community.

God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
