Fixing our Eyes
Today is March 7, 2018
Welcome to your mid-week!
In 1 John 2, Apostle John warns the church of loving the world. He warns that "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life" is not from the Father but from the world and, just like the world, it does not bring everlasting satisfaction but will pass away.
From this passage we were challenged to think about what we see and the dangers they hold. What is the 'lust of the eyes?' And we talked about pornography and coveting because often the eyes are the means by which sinful desires are introduced into our mind. Why? Because when things captivate our attention we often fail to inquire about their real value or harm.
For David, Bathsheba was so "very beautiful' that he did not care if she was married.
For Eve, the forbidden fruit was so 'pleasing to eye' that she did not care if it brought her death.
Yet this can be overcome. Through the example of Jesus we saw the need to be on guard and ready with scripture. How, when tempted with 'the kingdoms of the world and their splendor' Jesus was able to not be captivated and fight back against the visual temptation.
And that was our challenge. To fix our eyes on Christ, be on guard, and see the true value of the things this world throws at us. God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
