TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 24, 2020

It is Finished

Today is June 23, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

Usually, when we experience joy in this world, there is that little thought of doubt or uncertainty or fear in the back of our minds.

I love chocolate...but how many calories am I eating?
I love the work that I've done...but will it be outdated or need touch-ups or additions next year?
I love my kids...but am I raising them right? Will they make the right choices?

Yes, we experience joy but there is always a little whisper in the back of our mind.

Biblical joy is not suppose to have those whispers. In fact, biblical joy is the opposite. When faced with doubt or uncertainty or fear or failure, in the back of our mind should always be joy. That is the whisper that we should always hear.

The work that Jesus did on the cross for us - the work that resulted in our deliverance and salvation, that mended our relationship with our maker and allows for us to once again be in the presence of the Lord - that work is done. It is done. It is completed, perfectly, forever, in love by Jesus. And it always will be.

Whatever we might face - good or bad, highs or lows - you can be confident to know that, at least, that work is done. Meaning in the back of your mind you should always have that picture of Jesus' work - you should always have a picture of the cross. Whatever happens here, at least we have that. At least we have that, and that should give you joy. That should always give you joy.

And that was why Apostle Paul tells us all to rejoice always, because, the work of Jesus - the impossible work that he did for us - that work is completed. And it always will be.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family, and I look forward to worshiping with all of you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 17, 2020

The Goal

Today is June 17, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

Usually the goal of the work that we do is to succeed in the work. Whether that work is working on a project, or our taxes, or to spend quality time with a love one - the goal is usually to succeed in that endeavor. And, if that is the goal, then, if we fail, we usually experience stress or anxiety, disappointment, doubt, or even depression.

Well, in Philippians 3, Apostle Paul tells us that the goal is not whether you succeed or fail in the work that you do. No. The goal is to know Christ. That is the goal.

Now, does that mean we don't need to work hard? Does that give us a license to be lazy? No. As image bearers of God we need to emulate God. As He is excellence so we should strive for excellence. As He gives His best, so we should give our best.

However, the encouragement we have is that, even if we fail, it is okay. It is okay. In your success and failures, what is revealed to you about Christ? What is revealed to you about His power and love, about His suffering and death? How are you knowing Jesus more through the work you are doing?

Because, the more we know Christ, the more we understand and appreciate His great act of love for us, and that, in turn, should lead us to worship Him more.

Knowing Christ. That is the goal. The focus is not on the outcome. The focus is on He who overcomes.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you onsite or online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 10, 2020

Make Salvation Work

Today is June 10, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

Christianity is never a call to comfort or idleness or passivity. No. Christians are always called to do good work; to fulfill the purpose of God; to make salvation work in their lives.

But, Apostle Paul gives us a couple of very important guidelines in Philippians 2:12-18 in the actions we may feel convicted to do. One, our mindset needs to be that of Christ. Our mindset needs to be sobering reverential. And, two, our actions need to be based firmly in the word. We cannot act in a way that is contradictory to the commands of God.

If done correctly, we will be tempted to complain because it will go against our sinful nature, but, ultimately, the work God convicts us to do is be for our benefit. Apostle Paul had God's conviction, made salvation work in his life and, despite being in jail, felt joy. He actually mentions the word 'joy' four times in verses 17-18.

And that is our challenge.

God's protection and blessing over you as you make salvation work in your life and I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - June 3, 2020

A United Mindset

Today is June 3, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

How can we be unified in such a challenging and divisive time as this? Well, Apostle Paul has an answer. It's found in Philippians 2:5. In short, we need to have

the same mindset as Jesus.

That's Apostle Paul's solution to the question of how. If we can have Jesus' mind - his attitude - then unity will come. Meaning that the slogan WWJD is wrong. It should actually be WWJT aka What would Jesus think?

And what is Jesus' mindset? Well, verses 6-8 show us Jesus' mindset.

From a position of power, Jesus chose to be selfless.
From a position of authority, Jesus saw the need, and chose to serve.
From a position of strength, Jesus chose to humble himself to the point of embarrassment.

Selflessness. Servant. Humbleness. This was Jesus' mindset and Apostle Paul's answer to how we can be united. As he would say in Romans 12:2

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

And what is the fruit of that kind of renewed mind? Unity.

God's protection upon you and your family and I look forward to seeing you all either at the chapel or virtually

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - MAY 27, 2020

Thoughtful Love

Today is May 27, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

After thanking God for the church of Philippi, Apostle Paul prays for them. His first prayer? That their sacrificial love would grow more and more.

However, he doesn't just leave it like that. No. He gives very clear parameters in which he hopes this love would grow. Namely in knowledge, depth of insight, and discernment of what is best.

Here is Apostle Paul, in jail, writing from his own experience. Did Apostle Paul love sacrificially? Yes. Did he do it in a way that it would be received well? Probably, not. I mean, he is in jail...and his prayer is not that they would end up in jail too.

No. Apostle Paul's prayer is a prayer for thoughtfulness and practicality so that the sacrificial love done would be received well.

Anyone can love, but it takes knowledge, depth of insight, and discernment to love in a way that the other person feels loved.

God's blessing and protection over you and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.
