TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 2, 2020

The Wisest Thing to Do

Today is September 2, 2020

Welcome to September and your mid-week!

When it comes to obtaining things of value, usually wisdom is needed. Whether that is to conquer the world, have the best life, delay death, have peace in the present, or security for your future. Wisdom is needed.

However, for Apostle Paul, all of that is already ours in Christ Jesus. That's what he says in 1 Corinthians 3:21-23. That the world, life, death, the present, and the future is ours in Christ Jesus.

Meaning, the wisest thing to do would not be to seek those things but to know He who gives us all of those things. The wisest thing to do would be to know Jesus Christ.

Now, when faced with our present challenges, it is sometimes hard to view Christ with this much value. However, Apostle Paul is challenging us to see things from a larger perspective. That, if heaven is real and eternal life is available, wouldn't the wisest thing be to know that way, that truth, and that life? Especially when compared to the finite life we have on this earth?

Like, if we are born on one date and die on another date and that dash in the middle is all we get, then, by all means, we should focus on the wisdom of making that dash the longest most beautiful dash ever. But, if there was life beyond that dash. A new dash beyond your last date that extends to eternity, wouldn't knowing that way, that truth, and that life be worth an infinite more than what the dash between the numbers is worth?

Well, Jesus Christ is the way and the truth and the life. He is the way to eternity. This is why Apostle Paul gives up everything to share this message and why he viewed knowing Jesus as the wisest thing to do.

God's blessing and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you all online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 26, 2020

The Lord is Great

Today is August 26, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

Renowned Psychologist Dr Martin Seligman once said,

“Depression is a disorder of the ‘I,’ failing in your own eyes relative to your goals. In a society in which individualism is becoming rampant, people more and more believe that they are the center of the world. Such a belief system makes individual failure almost inconsolable.”

With depression connected to individualism, and with individualism becoming more and more rampant in our society, now is a great time to remember that we are not alone.

Deuteronomy 31:6 reminds us that God is always with us.
1 Corinthians 3:16 reminds us that the Spirit of the Lord lives in us.
1 Corinthians 12:27 reminds us that we are part of the body of Christ; the church.
Ephesians 5:25 reminds us that Jesus died for the church; giving himself up for us.

And we know that God does all of this because he loves us.

When David faced failure and injustice and his expectations not being met, instead of falling into depression, David was able to still his emotions, look to the Lord, and remember that he was not alone. David was able to find hope and, as Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, 'those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.'

In Psalm 70, in the mist of his dire situation, David was able to pause, remember the truth and faithfulness of the Lord, and say 'the Lord is great.' David was able to see the big picture and trust in the work of God in his life.

Now, did it solve his problems immediately? No. But what it did do was help him to endure them because he knew that God was working and that God would be faithful.

May you be able to find hope and strength in the Lord as you endure this pandemic and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 19, 2020

The Fruit of God's Will

Today is August 19, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

I think we all want to have excitement in our lives; excitement that leads to good work and growth in knowledge.

I think we all want to be able to have the power to persevere; the power to endure and be patient in difficult times.

I think we all want to be joyful and thankful; to genuinely smile.

Well, Apostle Paul, in his prayer to the church of Colossi, makes it clear that all of that - good work, growth in knowledge, the power to persevere, joy and thanksgiving - comes from knowing the will of the Lord. This is why his one prayer for the church was to ask God

"... to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives" (Colossians 1:9b)

When we are full of the will of the Lord then all of that good fruit will come.

God's blessing and protection over you as you ascertain the will of the Lord in your life, and I look forward to worshiping with you next Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 12, 2020

Praying Like Moses

Today is August 12, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

In Exodus 17, Moses, with Aaron and Hur, prayed with the staff of God in the air from morning to dusk, interceding on behalf of Joshua and the fighting men. By the time the sun set the battle was won.

This is a picture of intercessory prayer.

We have Joshua at the front lines. We have Moses and his team interceding in the back. Victory comes through their team work.

But, the take away should not be just the intercession of Moses and victory, but the focus and the manner in which Moses prayed.

The focus was on the staff of God - on the symbol of God's authority. Intercessory prayer is always about asking for God's will to be done, no matter what that is.

Also, the attitude to be willing to see God's will fulfilled whether or not it benefits the person praying, no matter the cost or time or how foolish it may look. That humility and perseverance is the attitude one needs to have when doing intercessory prayer.

I know that praying for someone may become frustrating, especially when we don't see results. However, our prayer is like the rain of Isaiah 55:10-11. We may not see what is happening but, in time, a bud will flourish. We may not understand or see the impact initially, but God is working.

This is why Jesus told his disciples to always pray and not give up (Luke 18:1), why Moses prayed all day for Joshua, and why all of us are called to intercede on behalf of people.

We may not understand God's way, but he is working, so don't give up praying. Don't give up praying.

God's blessings and protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 5, 2020

Be Blessed

Today is August 5, 2020

Welcome to August and your mid-week!

The blessings of the Old Testament are both a reminder of the hope that we have in Christ as well as a declaration of the inherit goodness of God.

Take the famous priestly blessing of Aaron to God's people in the book of Numbers:

Numbers 6:24-26
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Reading this blessing through the lens of Christ, we are reminded of our eternal security made possible by Christ's work on the cross, the great love that God has for us to give us salvation as a gift, and the peace we now have in Christ Jesus.

What they asked for, we received. What they wanted, we now have. Yes, in this broken world ravaged by sin, it is sometimes hard to see the hope that the Lord gives us, but this is why these blessing are important to look at and say out loud.

In Christ our eternity is secure. We are loved. Lift up your prayers to the Lord and find peace. This is the blessing that God gives us through Christ Jesus. This is how we are blessed.

God's protection upon you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you all this Sunday.
