TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 21, 2020

The Church is a Family

Today is October 21, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

Through Jesus Christ we are brothers and sisters, co-heirs to the kingdom of heaven, and sons and daughters of our Father in heaven. It is never said directly but it is implied everywhere - the church should be like a family.

And what is the foundation of every family? Love. Our first introduction and understanding of that word is shaped by our family. It is the first time we use that word toward someone and the first time it is used toward us.

Love is at the foundation of every family and it should be the foundation of the church because the church is suppose to be like a family. I mean,

Jesus' last command to his disciples was to love.
The greatest commandments both have the command to love.
1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love.

The church should be a family.

And so, how are your spiritual relationships? How is your love toward your Father in heaven? And, how is your love toward your brothers and sisters in Christ?

For, as Jesus tells us in John 13:35, this is how the world knows we are Jesus' disciples by how we love. Meaning, by loving our spiritual family, we share the gospel of Christ to the world. And that is something every Christian should be doing.

God's protection and blessing as you wrestle with the metaphor of the church being a family and I look forward to worshiping with you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 14, 2020

The Church is the Body of Christ

Today is October 14, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

Writing to the church of Corinth, Apostle Paul gave them this metaphor to understand what exactly is the church:

1 Corinthians 12:27
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

To say we are the body of Christ is to say that everyone is valuable, that everyone is essential.
To say we are the body of Christ is to say that everyone needs to submit to Jesus Christ, the head of the church.

With so many different people in this world, it makes sense that God would need a wide variety of people to reach them. This is the insight that the metaphor gives us.

However, if we are not trying to see the value in our differences and if we are not trying to obey God's command to preach the gospel, then we are not the church God wants us to be.

'Value' and 'Submission.' These are the words that Apostle Paul's metaphor should have us think about as we think about our role in the church.

God's protection and blessing over you as you wrestle with the idea of the church and the metaphor of the body of Christ, and I look forward to worshiping with you all this Sunday.

Church and Me

Today is October 8, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday we had World Communion Sunday and joint worship with the KM. In that service, our head Pastor preached on the church and how the church does not start in the building or within the chapel but at home. Pastor Ko's main point was that the church starts first with you and then your family.

With us 7 months into this pandemic with a majority of our worship services being done exclusively online, now is a great opportunity to reflect and rethink about what actually is the church and what role do we have in it.  And, if the church starts with us at home, what, then, is our responsibilities?

God's protection and blessings as you wrestle with the concept of the church and I look forward to worshiping with you online this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 30, 2020

Have Mercy on Me

Today is September 30, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday Pastor Diana preached on the cry of the tax collector to Jesus, aka 'the Jesus prayer' found in Luke 18. The prayer, put simply, is this:

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Here, the tax collector cries our in desperation to Jesus. The tax collector is not proud or boastful but acknowledges his sinfulness and his immense need for Jesus to show him mercy.

So often on Sunday we focus on the love of God or the faithfulness of God or the goodness of God. However, God is also a God of mercy. And, to really experience this characteristic of God, we need to be like this tax collector.

Our posture, our minds, our attitude needs to be the same as when the tax collector utters that cry to Jesus:

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Now, this is hard to do but, spiritually, it is amazingly rewarding. As pastor Diana said:

"...to be like the tax collector requires us to be brutally honest with ourselves and with God, to confess the worst of ourselves...but when we cry out to God and when we come before the Lord, when we approach the throne of God that knows us completely, the best and worst of us and still loves us regardless, we come before the God of mercy who forgives us of our sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness."

When we are first honest and desperate, then we can experience God's great mercy and understand what true forgiveness is.

God's protection and blessing over you as you cry out to the Lord and I look forward to worshiping with you all via our joint worship this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 16, 2020

Thoughts and Ways to God

Today is September 16, 2020

Welcome to your mid-week!

To the people of Isaiah, the description of the Messiah and the plan described by God through his prophet would have been confusing if not incomprehensible.

How can someone bring peace and safety and yet be despised and rejected?
How can someone rule in justice and righteousness and yet be poured out unto death?
In an era before crucifixion was invented, what does it mean that he has to be 'pierced for our transgressions?'

To the people of Isaiah, the description of the Messiah and the future plan of deliverance would not have made sense, especially in their current situation of facing invasion and exile.

But this is why God tells them in Isaiah 55:6-9 to basically not worry about understanding it all but to do what he asks them to do: to turn to him, forsake any wicked ways or thoughts, and trust in him.

Now, for us knowing who the Messiah is and seeing God's plan unfold throughout the bible, we can confidently say that God definitely had a plan and it was ultimately for the good of, not just the people of God, but for all people. And, if we can go back in time and talk to the people of God during the time of Isaiah, that is what we would tell them. That things may not make sense to you now but God does have an amazing plan and it is for the good of everyone, so trust him.

And that message for them is our message now.

Murder hornets, the pandemic, social unrest, double hurricanes, California on fire. It may not make a lot of sense now but, just as God told his people in Isaiah, he is telling us the same thing now: there is a plan, it is ultimately for our good, so turn to Him, forsake any wicked ways and thoughts, and trust in the Lord.

God's protection over you and your family and I look forward to worshiping with you all online this Sunday.
