TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 23, 2024

Embracing God’s Grace

Today October 23, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

In 1 Chronicles 17, David wants to build a temple for the Lord. God’s response?

No.

However, what appears to be a rejection is actually a redirection.

Right after God tells David ‘no,’ God then begins to share the amazing future David will have. David will have a future where his name will be like the names of the greatest men on earth, and where one his offspring will be the one who will establish the kingdom of God forever.

And, from that answer, David’s response is amazing.

David chooses to be thankful for God’s past mercies, to trust in God’s promises, and to hope for the future beyond his own life. David doesn’t get frustrated or angry at not doing what he wanted to do. No. Instead, David chooses to focus on the overwhelming grace of God and just rest in his future promises.

And it is that context that inspired the hymn Amazing Grace. How, just like David’s response, the hymn has us think about the past mercies of God and the beauty of his future promises.

And, in the face of God’s ‘no’ that should be our response as well.

Everyone will experience suffering, difficulties, and personal failures and pain. What sustains us in such times is not our strength, but God’s grace. And that is what the heart of the gospel is all about. How we are not saved by our own strength but by the grace of God.

King David will later write the famous Psalm 23. And the peace and comfort and strength and confidence described in that psalm, is what all of us can experience when we embrace the amazing grace of our Lord.

God’s blessing upon you as you mediate on God’s amazing grace, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
