TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 16, 2024

…Makrothymia

Today October 16, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

One of the fruits of the Spirit is ‘makrothymia,’ which gets translated to the words ‘longsuffering’, ‘patience’, and ‘forbearance.’

Longsuffering is about enduring hardship without losing faith

Patience is about waiting without complaining.

Forbearance is about personal interactions.

Makrothymia encompasses all three ideas. And ‘makrothymia’ is what Jesus shows at his crucifixion.

Jesus did not give up on his mission despite what he endured (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus showed calmness throughout his trials and punishment (Isaiah 53:7). Jesus forgave those who crucified him (Luke 23:34) even though he had the power to punish them (Matthew 26:53).

And his example to show that kind of restraint and perseverance and grace to people is the fruit all of us can have when we abide in Jesus.

We all know that as Christians we should not do the opposite of makrothymia. We should not be resentful or restless or retaliate on people. However, the bible does not tell us to muster makrothymia by our own will power. One of the reasons the bible encourages us to draw near to the throne of God (Hebrews 4:16) is to be able to produce this kind of fruit.

And the beauty of makrothymia is that it equips us to navigate suffering, delays, and difficult people—not from our strength, but from the Holy Spirit's power working in us.

God’s blessing as you draw near to God and meditate on the fruit of makrothymia, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
