The Principles of Voting
Today October 30, 2024
Welcome to your mid-week!
When you take Jesus’ analogy of us being the salt and light of the world…
When you take Jesus’ answer to what it means to love your neighbor being the Parable of the Good Samaritan…
When you take what God told his people to do in exile…
When you take Daniel and Joseph and Esther’s example in exile…
The principle seems to suggest that Christians have a responsibility to engage with their communities. That we should not be invisible. That we need to participate in a way that brings justice and mercy and the common good to the people.
In democratic societies, voting is one significant way to participate in this process.
Christians need to vote.
However, the perspective that we should come to the voting booth should be that of the spiritual sojourner. Meaning, as spiritual sojourners, we should not vote for our self-interest but for the interest of others.
In this way, voting is an act of faithfulness to God; an act of worship; an act of loving our neighbor.
From the perspective of the spiritual sojourner, voting should be done with great humility, discernment, and a deep trust in God's eternal kingdom. We should be seeking for the common good while maintaining hope in the transformative power of God, knowing that earthly elections are just one small part of His larger plan for justice and restoration.
God’s blessing upon you as mediate on the rights you have being citizens of this country while knowing that you true citizenship is in heaven, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
