Jesus' Disciples
Today is May 24, 2023
Welcome to your mid-week!
Of Jesus' 12 disciples, there were:
4 with respected, working class jobs,
1 with a job that was not respected,
2 that were educated,
1 that was passionate about politics,
1 that was best known for his skepticism,
1 that was known as the younger,
1 that was fairly quiet, &
1 that betrayed him.
And, oh, they were all most likely in their teens or twenties with only one of them mentioned as being married.
That was Jesus' 12 disciples.
And who made them into a family? Jesus did. That is what Jesus chose to do and showed by his actions toward them.
And, on one hand, that should encourage us. The more we see ourselves in the disciples, the more we can appreciate God's love for us. How God chose to give us an identity, a purpose, and a home in Jesus Christ. That we are now adopted children of God, heirs to the kingdom of Heaven. That we are family members with Jesus.
That act by God is his amazing love for us, and that act we can see in Jesus' actions with his disciples.
However, at the same time, the more we see Jesus' actions as the actions we should follow, the more we should be challenged to choose to love others with that same love. That, not only should I love my family members more, but I should choose to love the spiritual family that Jesus died to have.
And that is what Jesus died on the cross for. As Galatians 4:4-7 reminds us, Jesus died so that we might receive adoption to sonship, so that the Spirit of God may be in our hearts and that we can all cry out to God as 'Abba, Father'.
Meaning, Jesus and his relationship with his disciples should have us to ask, which is more important: our blood (as in our immediate family), or the blood of Jesus (who makes all who believe in him our spiritual family)?
God's blessing as you mediate on Jesus' disciples and the actions of Jesus with them, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
