Generous Love

Today is May 22, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

Loving your enemies is hard. Especially when they insult you, take from you, or force you to walk a mile. 

Now, if they were God fearing people, then maybe you would have some hope that, in time, the Holy Spirit would change them. I mean, there are plenty of verses about being kind and compassionate that, you know, they need to read. ;)

But, what if they are not God fearing people? What then, do you do?

Well, Jesus tells us to show generosity toward them. 

Just like you, your enemies are made in the image of God. They are stuck in the same sin as you were and are in the same fallen world as you are. And God loves them just as much as he loves you. He loves us all so much that, as it says in 1 John 4:10, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The only difference is that, maybe they don't know it. Maybe they don't know of their bondage or the rescue that was given to them by Jesus in love.

And so, Jesus tells us to be generous to them; to turn the other cheek, to give your coat as well, and to walk the extra mile. And that starts with prayer.

Loving your enemies is hard, but prayer is easy. And the more your lift your enemies in prayer, the less burden you will carry as you entrust that situation to the Lord, the more you will change to be like God, and the more empathetic you will be. Because, just as Jesus reminded us when he prayed for his enemies on the cross, those who do not know God really do not know what they are doing.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with loving your enemies, and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
