Welcome to your mid-week!
Growing up I never heard a sermon about intimacy. It was always "don't do it," "true love waits," and the occasional "sex is sin."
And so, with the absence of the topic from the pulpit, my ideas of intimacy were shaped by movies and TV, advertisements and video games, advice from people I respected, and from seeing the successes and failure of friends and family.
With something that has the potential for both great joys and terrible scars, does the bible not say anything?
Well, it does. In the honeymoon section, chapter 4:1-5:1 of Song of Songs, we see the joy of biblical intimacy. And what are the major principles we see? Well, we see
communication, tenderness, desire, patience, reassurance, security, trust, purity, passion, oneness, and confirmation, all in the context of marriage.
What we don't see is the opposite. We don't see
silence, pain, feelings of being unwanted, agitation, fear, danger, doubt, immorality, indifference, separation, and rejection.
And there lies our lesson.
God designed intimacy and teaches us, through his word, how best to experience it. This perspective, more than ever, needs to be preached and heard to both prevent future pain and to guide us to God's designed blessing.
God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
