Living With the Pain of the Past
Today is October 16, 2019
Welcome to your mid-week!
Psalm 137:9 is a horrific verse when taken out of context. But, within context, it is part of a Psalm of Lament - a Psalm of Mourning.
For the people of God, the devastation of the exile to Babylon had just been experienced. Sure, they knew why they were exiled, they knew what they were suppose to do there, and they knew what their children and grand children will experience in the future.
But, for this generation who was forced to live ~500 miles away in a foreign land - a generation who would never again see their homes or experience the smell of the ocean again - this Psalm was a plea for God to come, to be faithful to his word, and to right all the wrongs. This was a cry for justice.
The author of Psalm 137 doesn't say, 'God you are good because you never let me down.' No. He says, “God, even though I feel like you’ve let me down, I still believe you are good.”
And that’s what Psalms of Mourning are for. Psalms like this help us to pray through our anger, through our frustrations, through our spite and disappointments to eventually get us to a place of hope and peace.
God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
