Shuddering Faith

Today is October 24, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

In James 2, James talks about faith and action. He's not talking about salvation. He's talking about Christian maturity. And what does a mature Christian do? A mature Christian shows

mercy and compassion

on all people. A mature Christian does give judgement, even though they might deserve it. Instead, a mature Christian meets their need. As Jesus did with the immoral Samaritan woman; as Jesus did with the gentile demon possessed man, so should we. If we are mature Christians then we need to show

mercy and compassion.

If we don't then, by James' account, we are no better than demons. In fact, if we do not show

mercy and compassion

than we are worse than demons because at least demons fear God. So then, our challenge is clear: to not judge or to condemn but to meet the physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual needs of those around us.

God blessing upon you as you wrestle with this challenge and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

- Frank Kim

More Than Legions

Today is October 17, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Jesus restored a demon-possessed man in Mark 5 he was doing more than a simple exorcism. He was teaching us about the power of his love for us.

The demon possessed man was living in a tomb, in gentile country, surrounded by pigs, the most unclean environment for a Jewish man. Not just that, but he was most likely bleeding from the cuts he self inflicted, and was filthy having run naked in the hills both day and night. Oh, and on top of that, he was possessed. Not just by one demon but by a legion of demons.

This man was the most dirtiest man in the most dirtiest location being controlled by thousands of demons, and Jesus took a 4-6 mile boat ride across the sea and went into this gentile, foreign country to save him.

That's the power of his love. The same love he has for us.

...

I think, sometimes, we feel the sin in our lives is too big. Or that the sinful influences around us are too great. Maybe we are experiencing demonic influences or evil spiritual attacks where we feel that our own actions seem to be out of our control. Maybe we are facing physical or emotional or spiritual consequences to those forces and we think, I'm too lost; too far gone; too dirty to change.

Well, the restoration of the demon possessed man in Mark 5 is there to tell you that Jesus is bigger; that he is more powerful than whatever demon influences or spiritual attacks you are facing. That Jesus comes to where we are - at our most dirtiest moments - and says there is hope and freedom.

Paul tells us about the power of Jesus' love for us in Romans 8 telling us that

Romans 8:38-39
...I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

That is what Jesus showed the demon-possessed man in Mark 5, and that is what he shows us now.

Our challenge is to do what the demon-possessed man wanted  to do when he was restored to life. And that is to follow Jesus.

God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

The Importance of Communion

Today is October 10, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday we celebrated World Communion Sunday as a church by having a joint worship together with the KM, Youth, and Elementary in the Main Chapel. We had a praise team made up of all ministries that led us in praise in both English and Korean, we danced a little to one of the popular VBS songs of the summer, and we had communion as one church.

For the message, our new Elementary pastor and our Head Pastor both preached on the importance of communion. Communion reminds us of what Jesus did for us, challenges us to love each other now as he did then, and gives us all hope to his coming.

Sacrifice, love, and hope. That's what communion teaches us; a sacrament that unites us all and is something we should do more.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on Jesus broken body and blood spilled for you, and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Take Courage!

Today is October 3, 2018

Welcome to October and your mid-week!

When the disciples were at their lowest point, both emotionally and physically, Jesus came to them. When they were on a boat, in a 7-10 hr storm, at 700 feet below sea level, on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus came to them to give them hope.

And what was the fastest way to get to them? By walking on the water.

In the middle of the night, Jesus came down from the mountain, walked miles on the water, and got in the boat with his disciples just to calm there fears and bring them hope.

He was reminding them to not be anxious or be worried. In fact John, who was in that boat, would later write this:

1 John 5:4-5
for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Jesus not only saves us but gives us victory over fear and death. He gives us victory over whatever this world throws at us; over whatever storm may come.

So then, if you are in a storm or if you see one coming, Jesus words to his disciples are his words to you:

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all in the Main Sanctuary this Sunday as we celebrate World Communion Sunday as a church.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 26, 2018

What's Important

Today is September 26, 2018

Welcome to your mid-week!

The Samaritan woman of John 4 already had 3 strikes against her. She was a member of a persecuted minority, a woman living in Palestine during the time of Jesus, and in an immoral relationship. She would have been ostracized by her community. An outcast. Someone gossiped and ignored. Judged and ridiculed. A persecuted minority of a persecuted minority.

And yet Jesus takes a detour to meet her. The 'I AM' puts his journey on hold to do something important in order to reveal to her the love of God.

And what were the disciples doing in all of this? They were getting supplies for the trip and not focused on what Jesus was doing nor on who he viewed as important. They were too distracted with their tasks and blinded by their own prejudices that they didn't see the person in need.

And that is our lesson.

On one had, the story of Jesus meeting a Samaritan Woman at a well is an amazing demonstration of God's love for us. An actively seeking love that meets us where we are to give us hope and show that we are important and valuable to God. If you are or have ever felt like the Samaritan woman, be encouraged. God loves you. This is why we have hope. This is why we worship.

On the other hand, this story serves as a reminder
to not lose sight of what is important - people. For those of us who may not relate to the Samaritan woman but instead relate more to the disciples, the challenge is to not get lost in the tasks at hand or be blinded by our prejudices but to remember the 2nd greatest commandment - to love our neighbor.

As God loved us so we need to love others. That is what is important.

God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
