TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 17, 2018

More Than Legions
Today is October 17, 2018
Welcome to your mid-week!
When Jesus restored a demon-possessed man in Mark 5 he was doing more than a simple exorcism. He was teaching us about the power of his love for us.
The demon possessed man was living in a tomb, in gentile country, surrounded by pigs, the most unclean environment for a Jewish man. Not just that, but he was most likely bleeding from the cuts he self inflicted, and was filthy having run naked in the hills both day and night. Oh, and on top of that, he was possessed. Not just by one demon but by a legion of demons.
This man was the most dirtiest man in the most dirtiest location being controlled by thousands of demons, and Jesus took a 4-6 mile boat ride across the sea and went into this gentile, foreign country to save him.
That's the power of his love. The same love he has for us.
...
I think, sometimes, we feel the sin in our lives is too big. Or that the sinful influences around us are too great. Maybe we are experiencing demonic influences or evil spiritual attacks where we feel that our own actions seem to be out of our control. Maybe we are facing physical or emotional or spiritual consequences to those forces and we think, I'm too lost; too far gone; too dirty to change.
Well, the restoration of the demon possessed man in Mark 5 is there to tell you that Jesus is bigger; that he is more powerful than whatever demon influences or spiritual attacks you are facing. That Jesus comes to where we are - at our most dirtiest moments - and says there is hope and freedom.
Paul tells us about the power of Jesus' love for us in Romans 8 telling us that
Romans 8:38-39
...I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
That is what Jesus showed the demon-possessed man in Mark 5, and that is what he shows us now.
Our challenge is to do what the demon-possessed man wanted to do when he was restored to life. And that is to follow Jesus.
God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
