King David's Commencement Speech

 Today is June 14, 2023

Welcome to your mid-week!

King David's deathbed charge to his son Solomon is the closest thing we get to his commencement speech. And, what is his message? Well, to have a

love for God and his word.

Everything else that might come up - no matter how challenging the future will be - we will be able to walk through victoriously if only we have a

love for God and his word.

And the simplicity of that message in light of all the life experiences of King David really add weight to his words and his challenge to us. I mean, how important is the word of God to us, really?

Scripture tells us that the word of God is what guides us in this life; that the word of God is what warns us from doing stupid things; that, not only is there great reward in keeping it but the word of God is our only weapon against the lies of the enemy.

Yes, the bible answers those big questions in life - why are we here? What is our purpose? What is the meaning of life? What happens when we die? - but, more importantly, the bible contains the message of eternal life; of salvation; of the gospel message.

Those are the eternal reasons why the word of God is so important. But there are also some very practical reason why it is important too.

The bible promotes kindness, compassion, and forgiveness toward others. It teaches about the importance of honesty, integrity, and humility. The bible teaches us how to make wise choice, how to manage our finances, and how to resolve conflicts. In its pages is wisdom on how to cultivate healthy relationships and how to mentally be well.

As eternally important as the bible is, the bible is also an incredibly practical book.

No wonder King David, instead of talking about finances and relationships and governing and politics; instead of talking about food or health or vacation or work; instead of talking about social or cultural or national issues; far more important than anything else – David’s legacy to Solomon was that he instill in him a

love for God and his Word.

And, ultimately, that is his commencement speech to us.

God's blessing upon you as you mediate on your love for him and his word, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
