TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 18, 2024

To Be God’s Children

Today September 18, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

I believe one of the hardest things to do as a Christian is to realize that the ‘hard work’ we are called to do is not trying to obtain Christian attributes we do not have, it is about trying to learn more deeply about what we already have.

We grow up like the brothers from the parable of the prodigal son - having competitive, merit based expectations - so naturally that influences our faith and how we believe we mature as Christians.

However the example of Christ is not a goal to work for or a burden to achieve. It is the example of what is possible. It is what Christ enables us to do.

This is what Apostle Paul prayed for the church of Colossi to have. He did not pray for what they did not have. He prayed that they would be filled with all wisdom and understanding of what they already had. To know more deeply about the gospel. To know more deeply about Jesus Christ and what he did for them.

And that is the key perspective switch in what it means to mature as a Christian. Meaning…

Instead of behaving better, it is about believing better.

Instead of trying more desperately, it is about trusting more deeply.

Instead of performing more perfectly, it is about understanding more fully.

Only when we realize that the good work we are called to do is rediscovering the gospel, seeing and learning about the new reality we have in Christ, will those Christian attributes that we and others want to see in us, come.

God’s blessing upon you as you meditate on the good work you are called to do in rediscovering the gospel, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 11, 2024

To Trust in God’s Plan

Today September 11, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

On one hand, Isaiah’s 55:8 ‘my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord’ is a frustrating answer to the question of ‘why God.’ God’s sovereignty means what God has planned will happen. That, as he says in Isaiah 46:10, “…My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.” Meaning our understanding is not necessary in God fulfilling his plan.

And there lies the challenge of God’s sovereignty. If we cannot understand God’s plan, how can we trust in it? If we cannot know God, how can we trust him?

But this is why God sent Jesus to us. This is why Jesus is so important.

Knowing the thoughts and ways of God may be impossible, but it is possible to know Jesus.

This is why Apostle Paul said his entire focus was to know Jesus.

This is why suffering should be looked at as following in the footsteps of Christ.

I mean, Jesus was God’s beloved son and yet he was not spared the suffering of this world. On the contrary, God’s plan meant that Jesus had to suffer and die on a cross. And how did Jesus respond to that plan? With patience, humility, and trust.

And Jesus was able to trust in God the Father because Jesus knew him. And the more we know Jesus - the more we seek him with all our heart - the more we will know who God is. That he is loving and merciful and compassionate and faithful and, ultimately, good.

And from knowing him, we will be able to not just accept his sovereignty but rest in it – trusting in his control even when we do not know all the answers. That is the peace that Apostle Paul writes about in Philippians 4:7 - The peace that transcends all understanding.

And that is the peace we all have in Christ Jesus.

God’s blessing as you wrestle with the sovereignty of God while seeking to know Jesus more, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 4, 2024

Bending Toward People

Today September 4, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus could have completed all the tasks needed for redemption in one year, however Jesus spent three years doing ministry throughout Galilee. Why? Well…

Jesus spent a lot of time healing people.

Jesus spent a lot of time teaching and feeding people.

Jesus spent a lot of time going out of his way to meet with people.

And his willingness to invest in the individual lives of people shows us that Jesus was people centered. When it came to ‘task vs people’, Jesus bent toward people. And, as Christ followers, we must ask ourselves whether we bend toward that same way?

The call to love our neighbor is not always a call to do grand things.

Showing patience is an act of love.

Showing compassion is an act of love.

Showing mercy is an act of love.

And every time we choose to do so at the moment we are triggered by a task not being completed the way we wanted, the more we are true image bearers of God.

That is what Jesus’ example challenges us to do.

God’s blessing as you mediate on ‘task vs people’ and what it means to bend toward people, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Call To Make a Difference

Today August 28, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday I was on vacation moving, and Pastor Woogie Kim preached in my stead. In his message, he talked about the power we have as Christians. How, as God’s chosen people, we have, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the ability to bring about positive changes to ourselves, to our relationships, and to the world. He closed with a call for us to remember that power. He said

“Remember that the Spirit of God is upon you. And if you lean into that; if you can remember that; if you can muster the strength that God has given you, you can make a difference.”

And that call to make a difference is the call for every one who chooses to follow Jesus.

God’s blessing as you mediate on the power you have via the Holy Spirit and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 14, 2024

Walking in the Light and in Love

Today August 14, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

As Christians we need to be walking in the light of Christ. As plants bend toward the sun, so we need to be bending toward

virtue,

purity,

modesty,

devotion,

faith,

friendship,

peace,

generosity,

patience,

partnership,

agreement,

harmony,

kindness,

moderation,

self-restraint,

and, most importantly,

love.

And the reason we need to, according to Apostle John, is not for all the positive ways such actions impact people. It is because, if we do not walk in the light, we become

false teachers.

In fact, Apostle John, in his 2nd letter, calls those who claim to be Christian and do not walk in love ‘the deceiver’ and ‘the anti-Christ.’ That such people do ‘wicked work.’

This is not who we are supposed to be.

So, let us walk in the light and love of Christ, bending toward his light each day. For the light we reflect is making an impact.

God’s blessing upon you as meditate on your walk, what you are reflecting, and the people you are impacting, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
