TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 4, 2024

Bending Toward People

Today September 4, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus could have completed all the tasks needed for redemption in one year, however Jesus spent three years doing ministry throughout Galilee. Why? Well…

Jesus spent a lot of time healing people.

Jesus spent a lot of time teaching and feeding people.

Jesus spent a lot of time going out of his way to meet with people.

And his willingness to invest in the individual lives of people shows us that Jesus was people centered. When it came to ‘task vs people’, Jesus bent toward people. And, as Christ followers, we must ask ourselves whether we bend toward that same way?

The call to love our neighbor is not always a call to do grand things.

Showing patience is an act of love.

Showing compassion is an act of love.

Showing mercy is an act of love.

And every time we choose to do so at the moment we are triggered by a task not being completed the way we wanted, the more we are true image bearers of God.

That is what Jesus’ example challenges us to do.

God’s blessing as you mediate on ‘task vs people’ and what it means to bend toward people, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

The Call To Make a Difference

Today August 28, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday I was on vacation moving, and Pastor Woogie Kim preached in my stead. In his message, he talked about the power we have as Christians. How, as God’s chosen people, we have, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the ability to bring about positive changes to ourselves, to our relationships, and to the world. He closed with a call for us to remember that power. He said

“Remember that the Spirit of God is upon you. And if you lean into that; if you can remember that; if you can muster the strength that God has given you, you can make a difference.”

And that call to make a difference is the call for every one who chooses to follow Jesus.

God’s blessing as you mediate on the power you have via the Holy Spirit and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

Walking in the Light and in Love

Today August 14, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

As Christians we need to be walking in the light of Christ. As plants bend toward the sun, so we need to be bending toward

virtue,

purity,

modesty,

devotion,

faith,

friendship,

peace,

generosity,

patience,

partnership,

agreement,

harmony,

kindness,

moderation,

self-restraint,

and, most importantly,

love.

And the reason we need to, according to Apostle John, is not for all the positive ways such actions impact people. It is because, if we do not walk in the light, we become

false teachers.

In fact, Apostle John, in his 2nd letter, calls those who claim to be Christian and do not walk in love ‘the deceiver’ and ‘the anti-Christ.’ That such people do ‘wicked work.’

This is not who we are supposed to be.

So, let us walk in the light and love of Christ, bending toward his light each day. For the light we reflect is making an impact.

God’s blessing upon you as meditate on your walk, what you are reflecting, and the people you are impacting, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.

- Rev. Frank Kim

Running For the Prize

Today August 7, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

When Apostle uses a running analogy for the Christian faith, he is NOT saying we need to prove ourselves to God, he is NOT saying that we are competing against each other; and, he is most definitely NOT saying eternity is the prize.

No.

As he says in Philippians 3:13b-14, the prize is the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. The prize is having a relationship with he who is always there and loves us unconditionally. The prize is being transformed more and more to he who overcomes the world.

And the benefits of such a prize are priceless. When we have a relationship with Jesus, things that use to bother us, don’t anymore; things that use to rattle us, don’t any more; things that use to frighten us, don’t any more.

Having an ever deeper relationship with Jesus - knowing him more and more - is the prize. Meaning, our competition is our flesh, our inspiration is Jesus, and our trainers is both the word of God and the church itself.

That is what the analogy means.

And so, just like runners do to win the prize, we need to forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead - to press on toward the goal which is the prize of the upward call of God in Jesus Christ.

God’s blessing as you think about your race, and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 31, 2024

The Fruit of Lament

Today July 31, 2024

Welcome to your mid-week!

An emotionally mature Christian is not suppressing their negative emotions, nor are they letting them consume them. They are projecting them toward God in the form of lament.

And lamenting to God is important.

In lamenting to God, past experiences with God are remembered, future promises of God are revisited, God’s purpose to send his son to die for us is seen from a new, personal perspective.

And the end result of such wrestling with the Lord? Joy. Praise. Worship. This is what David teaches us in Psalm 13.

This is why James said to consider it pure joy when we face trials (James 1:2-4), why God made it so we can lament to him at all times (Hebrews 4:16, Matthew 28:20), and why mature Christians are not emotionless.

For, some joy is only found on the road of lament.

God’s blessing as you lament to the Lord, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
