A Spirit to Learn

Today is August 15, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

When 12 year old Jesus was accidentally left behind in Jerusalem for 3 days, he was found by his parents, not playing around or doing nothing, but

'sitting among the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions.'

And he wasn't just asking stupid questions either. The bible tells us that

'Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.'

Jesus had a teachable heart and a spirit to learn and, because of that, it says that he 'grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.'

That's the benefit of having that kind of heart and spirit.

With this season of 'back to school,' let us not forget that we, as adults, need to have that same spirit to learn. There are big philosophical and everyday questions that the bible answers. There are dangers and false teachings that the bible warns us of and helps us through.

Just as the omniscient God had a teachable heart and spirit to learn, so must we.

God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Genuine Christian Faith

Today is August 7, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

When confronted with Pharaoh's army on one side and the Red Sea on the other, God's people were told by Moses to not be afraid for, "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Now, being still did not mean doing nothing. Moses still had to obey God's command to raise his staff and stretch out his hand toward the water. The people of God still needed to obey the command to pack up their belongings and walk from one shore to the other. There were still things that they had the power to do which they needed to do.

So, being still meant doing what God told them to do and trusting that God would do only what he could do.

That's what Daniel's life encapsulated. When confronted with the lions den, Daniel did what he had always done - he prayed and gave thanks. In the face of the impossible he was still before the Lord. He did what he knew he should always do and he trusted God to do what only He can do.

And that daily act of obedience - of praying and reading God's word; of doing good and loving people; of coming together and worshiping our Lord - that is what we have the power to do and what genuine Christian faith looks like.

And that is our challenge.

God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - JULY 31, 2019

Of Faith & Envy

Today is July 31, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

This past Sunday I was away at our EM Family Retreat so Pastor Tim Lee from SBMC preached on my behalf, and he preached from 1 Samuel 18:1-19. And, in that passage, he focused on the relationship of Saul and David, talking about what makes and breaks relationships.

For Pastor Tim, relationships that make it are centered on the gospel. They have a common faith and a common hope. When everything changes, it is the gospel that stays the same and, so, that is what brings stability, longevity, and meaning.

On the other side, what breaks relationships for Pastor Tim is envy. Envy makes it so we can't enjoy other people successes or our own successes. In the end, envy destroys relationships.

And so, the challenge was clear: Commit more to relationships of faith and guard your heart against the sin of envy.

God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

Living By Faith in Christ

Today is July 24, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

The story of Tabitha is found in Acts 9 and it is a story that teaches us how to live a Christian life.

From Peter we learn the importance of saying yes and following Jesus' example.
From the Christian Community we learn the importance of taking leaps of faith and being there for each other.
From Tabitha we learn the importance of serving.

Sometimes the call to know the entire word of God and follow in the sacrificial example of Christ is intimidating. Now, with every reminder of the gospel, we should be convicted to go back to the challenge of knowing the word and following Christ but, sometimes, living the Christian life is hard.

This is where stories like Tabitha are important. They break down the challenges of the Christian walk into manageable pieces and help us to live the life of a Christian - to say yes, follow the example of Jesus, have faith, be there for each other, and to serve one another. In this way we are living by faith in Jesus Christ.

God's blessing upon you and I look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks.

Cheerful Generosity

Today is July 17, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

In writing to the church of Corinth on the topic of generosity, Apostle Paul reminds us that generosity first stems from what God gave us.

God was generous in sending his son to us. He who was rich became poor so that we, who were in poverty, might become rich. And this was all via his grace. We could do nothing to earn it or work for it. This was the amazing grace of God given to us because he loves us so much.

This alone should convict us to be more generous to others, giving as much of ourselves as Christ gave to us.

However, Apostle Paul doesn't want generosity to stem from duty or obligation or guilt. He wants it to come out of joy. And, so, he tells us the benefits of being generous. Namely, giving leads to spiritual richness, thanksgiving to God, & helps other people see God.

Giving gives us joy and peace, it allows us to appreciate what we have when we give to those in need, and it is a way that we reflect the generous nature of our Lord to others so that they can see that God loves them.

God's blessing as you strive to be more generous this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
