TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 18, 2019

Our Homework

Today is September 18, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jesus uses many teaching techniques throughout the gospels. In Matthew 9, he gives out homework.

The Pharisees had just criticized Jesus and his disciples for eating with 'tax collectors and sinners.' Now, with tax collector Matthew just becoming a disciple, this was an opportunity for Jesus to teach directly to the Pharisees and indirectly to his disciples and tax collectors he was with. His lesson? To go do homework.

Matthew 9:13a
...go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’

Jesus was invoking the lesson found in Hosea.

To the Pharisees it was a reminder of how God prioritized his people over their sin; how, despite what the law said, God showed mercy. It was a call to do likewise.

To the tax collectors who heard this exchange, it was a reminder of just how much God loves them; that, no matter their sin, God wants relationship with them. It was a message showing God's heart toward them.

For us it is both an encouragement and a challenge. No matter how much we feel condemned or judged by this world or ourselves, God loves us and wants to have relationship with us. At the same time, it is a cry to act mercifully toward people who are in biblical sin. To follow in His example so that people can learn and know who God really is.

God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

Teacher Korah

Today is September 11, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

Setting up and tearing down your camp site might be a little tough.
Setting up and tearing down your camp site along with doing that for the Tabernacle is tougher.
Setting up and tearing down your camp site along with doing that for the Tabernacle while seeing your relative garner the spot light and not help you with the work, is even tougher.
Now, add to that 40 years of wandering through the wilderness and you can guess why Korah rebelled. Because, that is what Korah went through.

However, while Korah thought he was rebelling against Moses and Aaron, who he really was rebelling against was God.

God had appointed the leaders.
God had set the law. God was leading them to the promised land. By rebelling against Moses and Aaron, Korah was showing disobedience to the will of God and, ultimately, this is what led to his destruction.

And this is the warning that Jude is evoking by mentioning the name of Korah in Jude 1:11.

One of the foundational steps of becoming a Christian is obedience - it is confessing Jesus as Lord. Even when we may not like it. Even when we may not agree with it. Ultimately we need to submit as Jesus did at Gethsemane:

Luke 22:42
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

Now, there's a reason John says in 1 John 5 that God's commands "are not burdensome." There's a reason that David says in Psalm 19 that God's commands are "more precious than gold" and "sweeter than honey." God wants the best for us and his commands are to have us experience the best life.

But, if we don't follow or believe in God's commands, then we might end up the same as Korah. That is the warning that Jude is telling us when he mentions Korah's name in talking about false teachers. It is a warning to not just be humble and generous but to be obedient to the word of the Lord as well.

God's blessing upon you as you wrestle with the commands of God and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 4, 2019

Teacher Balaam

Today is September 4, 2019

Welcome to September and your mid-week!

When God told Balaam not to curse his people, Balaam did as he was told. He did not directly curse God's people. No. He indirectly cursed them.

Giving advise to the Moabites, the Moabite women tempted God's people to sin and, in their sexual immorality and idolatry, God had no choice but to punish his own people.

Balaam did not directly curse God's people. No. He advised their enemies so that they would end up cursing themselves.

Why did he do this? For money. Balaam was greedy.

And, for centuries to come, he would be known as a false teacher. Peter, John, and Jude would all warn against being like Balaam. And that warning is for us as well.

Are we greedy with our money? Greedy with our belongings? Greedy with our time or energy or our very words? We might say we love someone and care about them; we might have the very message of life, but if we are greedy, if we are like Balaam, it corrupts that messages.

And that should not be.

God's blessing upon you as you strive toward generosity, toward Christ, and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 28, 2019

Teacher Cain

Today is August 28, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

Jude describes false teachers as people who have "taken the way of Cain."

For Jude, it was more then just the message that made a teacher false. It was their character. And what was the primary characteristic of Cain? Well, he was a man full of pride.

When confronted with his younger brother receiving the favor of God instead of him, Cain did not humble himself and ask why. Instead he became angry. Unwilling to learn from his mistake, Cain's pride led to anger that would eventually lead to the first murder in scripture.

And the warning that Jude gives us is that any one of us can follow down that same path. Any one of us can take the way of Cain. Any one of us can be false teachers.

When we focus on the failures of others. When we are self righteous or overly critical. When we look through people's live with a microscope. When we are quick to judge and quick to label. When we think everyone is privileged to be around us. That is the way of pride. That is the way of Cain.

And, even if our message may be good, if we take that way then we will ultimately lead people astray.

Jude teaches us that it is not just what is said but how something is said that is important. And that's the point.

God's blessing upon you as you strive toward humility, toward Christ, and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.

TFPC EM NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 21, 2019

Thirsty?

Today is August 21, 2019

Welcome to your mid-week!

In three locations in scripture, Jesus offers 'living water' - eternal, spiritual water without cost.

He offers it to the Samaritan woman in John 4, at the festival of the Tabernacle in John 7, and at the end of Revelation in Revelation 21 & 22.

And, in offering this water in these three locations, Jesus is indirectly telling us the people who need spiritual water. Namely, people who are in sin and shame, people who are lost and in the wilderness, and people who follow him as Lord. All these people need his spiritual water.

The question is, does that describes you at all?

Are you experiencing the weight of your sin? Of anger or addictions or lust or abuse? Of neglect or dishonor or not doing the things you know you should do?

Do you feel lost? Have you achieved what you thought would make you content but now feel empty? Has nothing worked out the way you thought and now you feel hopeless?

Are you a Christian? Have you, as it says in Romans 10:9 - [d
eclared] with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead?

If any of these are you at all then you need the living water that Jesus offers.

Just as physical water is important for your physical life both in its benefits and what it prevents, so spiritual water is important for your spiritual life. We all need water and we all need Jesus, and that's the point.

God's blessing upon you this week and I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
