The Faith of Ananias
Today is February 14, 2024
Ananias’ faith is one of those acts of faith that is not directly stated in the passage. However, when you think about what Jesus asks him to do and his initial response to the request, you can piece together his act of faith.
And boy is his act of faith difficult.
I mean, here was the persecutor of Christians before him. The one who had dragged men and women out of their homes and tossed them into jail. Surely, if you were a Christian, you would not talk to such a man let alone give him any kind of greeting. The mere sight of him would cause Christians to run the opposite direction.
But what does Ananias do? Ananias greets him with the phrase ‘Brother.’
Despite all that Saul had done, Ananias had forgiven him. And this forgiveness was not asked for nor was it stated. This act was done in the heart of Ananias and the evidence of that forgiveness is found in the greeting Ananias gives him.
And that was an act of faith, an act of faith that was only done because Ananias was standing, just a verse earlier, before Jesus; standing before the presence of God.
And when we live that kind of life - living in his presence, living ‘Coram Deo’ - then there is no higher goal than to give him glory and honor.
This is how Ananias was able to do his act of faith. His act of forgiveness was not for him or for Saul, it was an act of worship; an offering of sacrifice onto God.
God’s blessings upon you as you meditate on Ananias’ faith. And I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday.
